Abt 1050 - Aft 1100 (51 years)
-
Name |
Walter FITZ OTHO [1, 3] |
- After the Conquest in 1066, he was treated by the Normans as one of their fellow-countrymen, a fact which seems somewhat remarkable, and he was mentioned in the Doomsday Book as being in possession of his father's estates in 1078. He was Castellan of Windsor and Warden of the forests in county of Berks.
This fortunate heir put the cope-stone to his prosperity, by marriage with Gladys, the daughter of Rhiwallon ap Cynfyn, Prince of North Wales, by whom he was father of three sons:
Gerald Fitz Walter (Gerald de Windsor), the eldest son and successor.
Robert de Windsor, Baron of Eston
William de Windsorm Ancestor of the Barons of Windsor and Earls of Plymouth, also of the Marquess of Lansdowne.
[1]
- Walter FitzOther was a feudal baron of Eton in Buckinghamshire (now in Berkshire) and was the first Constable of Windsor Castle in Berkshire (directly across the River Thames from Eton), a principal royal residence of King William the the Conqueror, and was a tenant-in-chief of that king of 21 manors in the counties of Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Surrey, Hampshire and Middlesex, as well as holding a further 17 manors as a mesne tenant in the same counties.
