This biographical sketch adapted from the LDS Biographical Encyclopedia.

Jacob Gates, one of the (LDS) First Seven Presidents of Seventies from 1862 to 1892, was the son of Thomas Gates and Patty Plumbly... His father was a farmer, and during the early period of Brother Gates' life he worked on the farm. He also worked at the carpenter and joiner trade, and his education was confined to a limited period of time.
He married Millie M. Snow, (Her name is given in another source as Mary Minerva Snow.) daughter of Levi Snow and Lucinia Streeter, March 16, 1833. Later in life he practiced plural marriage and fathered a total of thirteen children of record. He was baptized by Orson Pratt June 18, 1833, and confirmed a member of the Church the same day by Zerubbabel Snow. April 11, 1834, with his young wife, he left his father's house for Missouri, where he arrived June 30, 1834, and located seven miles west of Liberty, Clay county, which was quite a small village at that time.

While here Brother Gates was invited to go with Caleb Baldwin upon a mission, on which he left Jan. 25, 1836. At Flat Branch, Sangamon county, Ill., on Feb. 18, 1836, he was ordained an Elder in the Church under the hands of Elder Baldwin, and on the 25th of the same month he left Edgar county, Ill., to return home to Clay county, in company with 32 souls, who chose Elder Gates as their captain.

In the fall of 1836 Elder Gates moved to Caldwell county, Mo., a distance of about fifty miles, where he was ordained a Seventy under the hands of the Prophet Joseph Smith and Sidney Rigdon, Dec. 19, 1838. In the same fall (1838) he had been compelled to march under a large military escort, in company with some fifty-seven other brethren, a distance of about forty miles, to Richmond, Ray county, to which place Joseph and Hyrum Smith had also been taken from, Far West. Elder Gates' journal says: "It was here that we were tried for all the capital crimes, save one, before Judge Austin A. King, and we were imprisoned some three weeks. Finally we went each other's bail and were released, when we left for Quincy, Illinois."

Not long after this Elder Gates went to Hancock county and received a commission as ensign in a company of militia. The same month he left home in company with Chandler Holbrook to preach the gospel, going as far east as Kirtland, Ohio, and Clay county, Mo., and in the fall returned home, in company with Wm. Snow he left Nauvoo, July 7, 1843, on a mission to La Porte, in the northern part of Indiana, and the fall of 1841 he went south into Marshall county and organized a branch of the Church; a goodly number were baptized.

In June, 1843, he again left home for a mission to the New England States, and before going he met the Prophet Joseph. His health was feeble, but the Prophet said: "Go and fill your mission, and we will wrestle after you come back." The Prophet and Elder Gates would often engage in the game for exercise. When Elder Gates returned home from his mission, May 26, 1844, he saw the Prophet for the last time, a little distance from him, on his horse, going to his martyrdom.

At the October conference, 1844, he was ordained and set apart senior president of the fourth quorum of Seventies, under the hands of Parley P. Pratt and Orson Pratt.

In the autumn of 1847 he came to Utah, and in the fall conference of 1849 he was appointed, with several others, to take a mission to England. He left Salt Lake City Oct. 19, 1849, and embarked at New Orleans on the steamer "Maine," which arrived in Liverpool April 6, 1850. While on this mission, which lasted three Years, Elder Gates filled several important positions in presiding over different divisions of the British mission, and many were added to the Church. On his return home he was appointed to take charge of a company of Saints which he successfully brought across the plains, arriving in Salt Lake City Sept. 30, 1853.

During the following few years he traveled throughout Utah, assisting in the organization of the different quorums of Seventy. In 1859 he was called on another mission to Europe. To fill it he left Utah Sept. 19, 1859, and reached Liverpool on the 13th day of December, Soon after his arrival there he received a letter from Pres. Brigham Young, informing him that he had been selected as one of the First Council of Seventies. While upon this mission he traveled with Apostles Amassa M. Lyman and Charles C. Rich. In 1861 he returned home; on his way he stopped at the different points and assisted in the outfitting work of companies of Saints about to cross the plains. At the October conference, 1862, he was ordained a member of the First Council of Seventies.

While living in St. George, Washington county, he served as a member of the county court for several years. He was also elected a member of the house of representatives of the legislative assembly of the Territory to represent the district composed of the counties of Washington and Kane. He was re-elected three times to the same officer, namely, in the years 1864, 1865, 1866 and 1867. He was also elected a member of the council of the legislative assembly in 1873, to represent the district composed of the counties of Kane and Washington. May 12, 1866, he was appointed brigade aid-de-camp, First Brigade of the Nauvoo Legion Militia of Utah, in Iron military district, with the rank of colonel of infantry.

After a well spent life Elder Gates died at his residence in Provo, Utah as a true and faithful Latter-day Saint.

He married his second wife Susan Green November 15, 1855. When the exodus begun in 1846, leaders of the church called upon Erastus to make the roads, build the bridges, and plant the crops the Saints would need in their trek acroos Iowa. His wife, Olive and his two small children joined him in Council Bluffs, with the main body of the church, just in time to hear the call for the "Mormon Battalion".

Erastus was president of the 38th Quorum of Seventies. In 1858, having served in the Mormon Battalion and then in state militia, Erastus was called to serve again, with the rank of Major, in the Echo Canyon campaign against Johnston's Army.

In 1860, Erastus took his second wife, Susan and her small children to Slaterville, where he farmed and herded cattle. He served the Lord as a missionary in St. Johnsbury, Vermont, to many of his cousins which lived in the area. By 1879, polygamy laws made it difficult to live in South Fork, so he moved Olive (his first wife) and Susan (wife #2) to southeastern Utah. They then moved to Macious, Colorado and finally Tucson, Arizona.

My father, Great grandson of Erastus Bingham, Jr., says his great grandpa was never known by a middle name of Clarence. Somehow on the 1880 US Census that middle initial was attached to his name but it is an error. I hate to argue with my cousin Nancy Day, but this really needs to be corrected. My daddy, who is 90 years old, was born after the decease of his Great grandpa, but he, his dad, mother, and older brother, visited with the relatives in Tucson and Mesa when he was a little boy. My daddy bears the surname Bingham and the middle initial E

Thomas was born in Littleton, New Hampshire on July 19, 1824. His family joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints (also known as the Mormon church) in 1833. Thomas was in the Mormon Battalion, and was sent with the sick detachment to Fort Pueblo, Colorado. There he met Carron Happuch Holladay. Caron and her family were traveling with the Mississippi Saints, and also wintered in Fort Pueblo. Caron and Thomas were married on September 6, 1849 by President Brigham Young. Thomas and his brothers Erastus and Sanford tended livestock at the mouth of Bingham canyon (the canyon is located in the Oquirrh Mountains approximately 25 miles southwest of Salt Lake City. It was named after the Bingham brothers who were the first settlers there). In 1850 Thomas and Caron moved to Ogden. In March 1851, they were called to go with a company of Saints to help establish the settlement of San Bernardino, California where they remained until the spring of 1855, returning to their former home in Ogden. In the spring of 1856 Thomas was called on a mission to the Salmon River Indians where he served two years and during this time Caron was left with the responsibility of caring for their three children. Their family was with those who went south during the Johnston army episode. In the spring of 1862 the Bingham family helped to establish Huntsville in Ogden Canyon and, in the fall of 1877, moved to Ashley Valley, locating first on the Green River; then, in the spring of 1878, they moved to Dry Fork (Mountain Dell), north of Vernal, where they resided for several years. In the fall of 1884 they moved to Mill Ward now Maeser Ward. Thomas died December 31, 1889.

Thomas Bingham Senior
A brief sketch of the life and synopsis of the funeral of Elder Thomas Bingham Sen., who died at 20 minutes to 2 o'clock on the morning of Dec. 31, 1889.
Brother Bingham was born July 19, 1821, In Littleton, Grafton Co, New Hampshire and was the son of Erastus and Lucinda Gates Bingham. He was baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1837 and shared with his father's family the persecutions of the Saints. He received his endowments in the Nauvoo Temple, enlisted in the Mormon Battalion July 16, 1846, and traveled with the Battalion some distance beyond Santa Fe, where he was sent back with the second sick detachment to winter at Pueblo. He came to Salt Lake July 29, 1847. He was married September 6, 1849, to Caron H. Holliday, and moved to Ogden in 1850. In 1851 he was called to go to California, with C.C. Rich and Amasa Lyman. Returning to Ogden in 1855, he was called in 1856 on a mission to Salmon River, where he labored among the Lamanites until the Saints were called home on account of hostile Indians. He reached home the time of the "move," and moved his family south to Payson, and then returned to Ogden to guard the property of the Saints. In 1862 he moved to Huntsville, Weber County, where he lived several years. While there he was first counselor to President Jefferson Hunt, and after his removal was appointed counselor to Bishop F. A. Hammond.
In 1877 he moved with his family to Ashley, Uintah County. With the sanction and approval of President Taylor and the Twelve Apostles, he established a branch of the Church at that place, and was chosen by the people to preside over it. He was the first Presiding Elder of this place, also the first ordained Bishop. He was appointed selectman by the Legislature, and was the first Probate Judge of the county. He served two terms, and was nominated for the third, but declined on account of ill health. He was a member of the High Council at the time of his death.
The funeral of Brother Bingham was held in the Uintah Stake House, Sunday Jan. 5th, 1890. The house was suitably draped for the occasion. There was a large attendance of relatives and friends, and the occasion, though sad, was an impressive one. Among the speakers were Brothers Samuel Campbell, Matthew Caldwell, Harley Morley, James H. Glines, Dannie Winn and Samuel Thompson, members of the Mormon Battalion, and while they sought to convey consolation to the bereaved, and spoke in terms enlogistic of the departed, their emotions were so strong as to almost overcome them, and every heart in the congregation was touched. Counselor R. S. Collett addressed the congregation for a short time. He said that it was characteristic of the deceased, that he was strong in his convictions and ever on the side of right. His remarks were full of comfort and hope and calculated to inspire his hearers with a desire for eternal life. President Bennion endorsed all that had been said, and truly did he say that a good man had left us, nor was there any one present who had known him but would have added their testimony that all that had been said that day in praise of Brother Bingham was the truth.
So was he spoken of while he lived. So has he left his record behind him. Brother Bingham leaves behind a wife and seven children, all of whom were present at his funeral with the exception of his son David, who is at present on a mission to the Southern States.

BINGHAM-Willard Bingham, one of the oldest pioneers of the state, passed away at Smithfield, Cache county, yesterday. He was 83 years of age and had spent most of his life in this vicinity, where he was engaged in the lumber business. His
children and grandchildren are represented in all parts of the state. The body will be brought from Smithfield Saturday and may be viewed at the Lindquist chapel until noon of that day. The funeral services will be held at 1 o'clock Saturday afternoon in the Third ward meeting house, with Bishop Bingham of Wilson presiding.
Deceased was born in Vermont February 19, 1830.

Obituary:
PIONEER DEAD. Dr. Edwin Bingham Succumbs to Pneumonia.

Dr. Edwin Bingham, an old pioneer of Ogden died this morning at 8:50, at his
residence, 3343 Washington Avenue, of pneumonia. He was born at Concord,
Vermont, May 5, 1833, and came to Utah September 19, 1847, in the second company
of hand-cart pioneers.

He leaves a large family, consisting of five daughters, three sons, twenty-nine
grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. One of his daughters, Mrs. W. G.
Taylor, is now in the Hawaiian Islands with her husband.

The funeral will be from the First Ward meeting house, Friday, at 2 p.m. The
remains can be viewed at the residence from 10 to 1 o'clock, Friday.

The burial of Elizabeth A. (Williams) Gates in the same Gates family plot as Horace Goss Gates and his father, John Gates, should be considered in the context of historical records, which establish that Betsey (Ayer), not Elizabeth A. (Williams), was Horace?s mother. Horace?s birth in 1842 (1, 2, gravestone photo here) occurred while Betsey was married to John (1, 3-6). Her 1844 death record specifies that she was married to John (4), and her gravestone inscription is ?wife of JOHN GATES? (5). Horace was born in St. Johnsbury, VT (1, 2, 7), which is where Betsey lived (1-3, 8). Betsey died in the adjacent town of Lyndon (4). Betsey?s date of birth of June 9, 1807 (1, 4, 5) is consistent with the date of birth of Horace and his full brothers (1). In addition, the Gates genealogy book lists Betsey as his mother, as does his death record (1, 2). The minor misspelling of her maiden name as Ayre and Ayers instead of Ayer in these two records is clearly of no significance when viewed in the context of historical records, which establish Betsey?s maiden name as Ayer (5, 9). Betsey was part of a large Ayer family group that lived in the St. Johnsbury, VT area in the early 1800s and Horace was named in memory of Betsey?s Ayer-side 1st cousin, Horace Goss, who died in an accident (5 and sources cited therein).

Horace was simply buried in the same plot as his father.
The phrase in the Memorial ? ?Note: Gates family lot: Annie, Leroy, Horace, Elizabeth O, John, Maynard?- implies that Elizabeth, not Betsey, may actually have been Horace?s mother, and indeed this phrase was accompanied by the listing of Elizabeth as Elizabeth ?Betsey? in the title of an earlier version of Elizabeth?s Memorial. It is listed this way in several posted family trees. What seems to have happened is that Horace was incorrectly assumed to be Elizabeth?s son because he was buried in the same plot. And since Horace?s mother was known to be Betsey Ayer, Elizabeth, was assumed to be Betsey Ayer, or at least to have gone by the name of Betsey. This is an important issue for correctly identifying family members and for understanding the history of this family (including John?s three marriages).

The following evidence that Elizabeth A. (Williams) was not Horace?s mother is in addition to the substantial evidence already described.
Elizabeth?s maiden name of Williams (10-19) is inconsistent with the known maiden name of Horace?s mother. Her middle initial of A. stands for Ann (11, 17, 18), or possibility Abigail (1) if she had two middle names.

Elizabeth?s date of birth of July 1, 1825 (gravestone photo in 10, 13) is inconsistent with the date of birth of Horace?s older full brothers, Harvey, James and George (1). For example, Harvey was born when Elizabeth was one-year-old (1, 8, 20, 21).

Elizabeth?s marriage record (as Williams, Evans, Currier, Gates and Colby) is inconsistent with Horace being her child (10). This includes the date of her marriage to John, which occurred 19 years after Horace was born. Related evidence is the 20-year gap between Horace?s 1842 birth (1, 2, 7, this Memorial) and the births of John and Elizabeth?s actual shared children, Oscar, Henry and Lydia (1).
Historical records provide no evidence that Elizabeth ever lived in St. Johnsbury, which is where Horace was born. All known records pertaining to Elizabeth indicate that she lived in the Derby/Brighton area of Vermont around that time. Specifically, she was born in Derby in 1825 (12), and was evidently living with her parents in Random/Brighton in 1830 and 1840 (22, 23). She married in Derby in 1845 (11) and gave birth to a child in Derby that year (24). She was living in Wenlock/Brighton in 1850 (25) and gave birth again in Brighton in 1851 (14, 15).

There is no evidence that Elizabeth and Horace ever lived in the same household in Census records or in any other record. The 1850 Census records are the most significant of these since Horace was only 8 years old at the time. Elizabeth is found as Elizabeth A. Currier in Wenlock, VT along with her son from an earlier marriage (25). Horace was not listed there. Instead, Horace lived with John and Eliza Gates in Lyndon, VT in 1850 (26). The age of Eliza Gates in the 1850 Census does not match that calculated for Elizabeth either, but instead is consistent with that of Eliza (Fisher) Gates, John?s second wife (6 and sources cited therein).

Elizabeth?s Probate Record (as Elizabeth A. Colby) in Cheshire County, NH (27) does not include anything about Horace even though it contains the signatures of her sons, Oscar and Henry Gates (Horace?s half-brothers), along with her two Currier sons from her prior marriage. This is a significant omission since Horace lived only a few miles away from her in the adjacent town of Keene, NH (28-30), while his two half-brothers lived in Brooklyn, New York (31-34) near the time of Elizabeth?s death in Marlborough, NH (13).

The photos of the gravestone for Horace (this Memorial) and for his wife, Estella (as Estella R. Martin Beliveau) (35), are so similar as to suggest that they share the same gravestone, or at least are located near each other and with their children in the same Gates family plot. This would be another indicator that more than one Gates household was buried in this plot. Unfortunately, the plot number for Estella is not listed in her Memorial.

No known historical record lists Elizabeth as Betsey. Similarly, no known historical record describes John?s first wife, Betsey, as Elizabeth. The error in indicating that Elizabeth was widely known as Betsey (referred to as Elizabeth ?Betsey?) is ironic because Elizabeth had evidently tried to distance herself from the names of John?s first two wives, Betsey (Ayer) and Eliza (Fisher). Her contemporary Gates relatives knew her as Abigail (1). She probably did not like the idea of her third husband referring to her by the same name as an earlier wife.

Mr. Rix received what little education he has in the common schools, one term in a High School in Rumney, NH, and one winter in the common school in Middleport, NY, in the winter of 1845-46, which was the last of his schooling. At the age of sixteen he accompanied his parents to western New York and located in Hartland, Niagara County, and in the fall of that year (1844) he went with his parents to Middleport, about ten miles away, and in about one year they removed to Jeddo, Orleans County, a little hamlet about five miles from Middleport, just across the line of Orleans County on the "Ridge Road." Here he remained, working for his father in the shop, when his parents removed to Michigan in 1851, when he returned east to visit his grandparents, who were living in Haverhill, NH. Here he met the lady whom he afterwards made his wife, and in consequence concluded he would not return, and entered the employ of Jonathan S. Nichols at Haverhill Corner, in the department of blacksmithing. Her he remained till the spring of 1853, when he wen to Littleton, his native town, and entered the employ of Daniel C. Quimby, when he left there July 18, 1853, for Michigan, where his parents resided. Here he entered into partnership with Mr. Munroe Ingraham in the foundry and machine business.

In May, 1854, he started east for his bride, and immediately after his marriage started on his return for Michigan. That same fall both he and his wife were taken down with fever and ague, and being dissatisfied with the country he disposed of his interest in the business and returned to Littleton and again entered into the employ of Mr. Quimby. In the spring of 1855 he removed to Concord, NH, and entered the employ of Lewis Downing & Sons, carriage manufacturers, where he remained till the war of 1861-65 broke out, when he removed to western New York and located at County Line, a village and post office of that name on the line between Niagara and Orleans Counties, and about two miles from Lake Ontario. Here he entered into business with his brother Joel in the business of carriage making and custom blacksmithing. Here he remained till July 21, 1862 when he enlisted in Co. A, 129th NY vol. Inft., Capt. Erastus M. Spaulding, Col. Peter A. Porte. He was mustered into the U.S. service at Lockport, Aug. 22, 1862, and the next day the regiment left for Baltimore, Md., where it did guard duty in and around Baltimore. December 19, 1862, the regiment was reorganized into the 8th New York Heavy Artillery. In Grant's campaign of 1864 the regiment was ordered to the front.

Mr. Rix was appointed Armorer at Fort McHenry, Baltimore, Md., Oct. 21, 1862; Brigade Armorer at same fort, may 17, 1863; and Artificer in May, 1864. He participated in the battles of North Anna river, Coal Harbor, June 3, 1864, front of Petersburg, June 16, 17, 19 and 22, at which battle he was wounded and taken to the rear. He was taken to Washington, DC and landed in mount Pleasant Hospital, where his right leg was amputated July 7, 1864. His wife went to Washington to care for him and was with him until early in November of that years, when they both went to their home, which had been established in the spring at the old stand of his father.

In February, 1865, he returned to the hospital in Washington and was discharged March 21, 1865, and returned to Jeddo and commenced anew the carriage business. he continued the business until 1873, when in that year he made a visit east, and an opening presented itself which he took advantage of and returning to Jeddo sold out his plant and in November 1873, removed his family to Concord, N, and entered the employ of the Concord Carriage Co., as foreman in the blacksmithing department. In 1878 he went to St. Louis, Mo., as superintendent of a large carriage manufactory, and after a year moved his family there, but his wife being very much out of health and homesick he returned with them, but went back and stayed four years, when the firm abandoned the carriage business and went into manufacturing electric street cars, but Mr. Rix not understanding such work, nor caring for it, returned to Concord and re-entered the employ of the concord Carriage Co.

Mr. Rix has been a strong temperance man all his life and is probably the oldest "Son of Temperance" in the state, if not in the United States, having been initiated in Jeddo Division, No. 27, by Philip S. White, of Philadelphia, in June, 1847. He was also made an Odd Fellow in Moosehillock Lodge, No. 25, in Haverhill, NH, in January, 1852. He is also a member of the G.A.R. Post, in Concord. he is a Justice of the Peace and Quorum. In 1898, Mr. Rix lost his health, so much so that he has been unable since to do any manual labor, and since has been doing genealogical work. Both Mr. and Mrs. Rix are members of the M.E. Church in Concord, where they reside.

Dr. Rix was a soldier of the great American Rebellion, having enlisted in Co. D, 1st. Mich. Inft., and was mustered in as Firs Lieutenant. He commanded his company at the first battle of Bull Run in 1861. He was mustered out at the expiration of his term of enlistment but on account of disability did not re-enlist. Soon after his discharge from the army he entered the American College of Dental Surgery, from which he graduated in 1863.

He lived in Clinton, Michigan, a short time after his marriage, then he removed to Dowagiac, same state, where he has practiced dentistry, his chosen profession, since, except the five years he was in Chicago, but kept his home in Dowagiac. He has served as Alderman; was elected Mayor in a city overwhelmingly Republican, and in his ward of 400 voters received every vote except two. He has been supported by his party (Democratic) for representative and senator, running many votes ahead of his ticket. He was president of the union Fair Association two years; secretary of the same association two years, and president of the Mutual Village Fire insurance Company twenty years. He is past master of Masonic Lodge, past high priest, thrice past illustrious master of the Council, has been deputy grand chancellor of the state, Knights of Pythias, and is a member of B.P.O. Elks, Knights of Honor and Legion of Honor.

In his earlier days Dr. Rix was a member of the theatrical profession and at times still appears before the public behind the footlights. He has acquired considerable distinction as an Irish comedian and has performed in the principal cities in the Union. He is the founder of the "Michigan Free Mason" and was editor and publisher for five years. He was for five years a professor in the American College of Dental Surgery, Chicago, Ill.

He was a dentist in Dowagiac with his brother Thomas till 1875, when he removed to Fort Madison, where he practiced dentistry until his death. He was a lieutenant in the 4th Michigan Cavalry during the rebellion. A detachment of this regiment was in the part that captured Jeff Davis. At the battle of Stone River he was thrown from his horse and broke his wrist, causing the abandonment of his playing the violin, on which he was an artist. He was capable of playing any wind instrument and soon after his recovery he as given the position of leader and director of the brigade band. Dr. Rix had a fine tenor voice and sang for many years in public and in the churches. His widow is a fine musician and for several years went to Burlington, Iowa, to play the organ in a church there. She is now a teacher on the piano and resides with her daughter at Fort Madison, Iowa.

Soon after his marriage he removed to Michigan and settled in Mason, where he established himself in the carriage business. After a few years he sold out and removed to Kalamazoo, where he worked for others, and while doing so he perfected and patented a number of inventions which he sold outright and put the money into a home in the city and a farm in the country which his sons operated for some years. His home is all broken up and he is with one of his sons in Kalamazoo.

Leah Snow Hall, age 96, passed away January 2, 1992 in Salt Lake City.
She was born February 25, 1895 in Salt Lake City to Moroni and Emma Gates Snow. She married Virgil C. Hall on June 12, 1918 in the Salt Lake City to Moroni and Emma Gates Snow. She married Virgil C. Hall on June 12, 1918 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple.
Leah was an active member of the LDS Church and served as a teacher in various organizations. She taught school for several years in Salt Lake City and had a keen interest in education. She assisted in the operation of the family business, State Wallpaper Co. She will be remembered for her positive attitude and continuous support of her family.
She is survived by her children, Marjorie and her husband Earl Spackman; Norman and his wife Francis Hall, all Salt Lake City; Gilbert and his wife Marie Hall, Columbus, Ohio; Janice and her husband Richard DeVore, Fort Collins, Colo.; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Monday, January 6, 1992, at 12:00 noon, in the Russon Brothers Mortuary, 255 South 200 East. Friends may call 10:45-11:45 a.m. Interment, Salt Lake City Cemetery.
