  1. 1.  George Washington TERRETT was born on 18 Feb 1800 in Stonington, New London Co., Connecticut; died on 24 May 1876 in Pittsfield, Berkshire Co., Massachusetts.

    Name:
    In early spring 1823, less than five months after his marriage, George W. Terrett of Granville bought his uncle John Terrett's half interest in a 130-acre farm in Colebrook, Connecticut, which the uncle had owned in common with his brother Charles; other purchases there followed. About April 1826, George returned to Granville, where he remained. A Hampden County history depicts him thus:

    GEOGE W. TERRETT, late a prosperous farmer and prominent citizen of Granville...sent his boyhood days in Stonington. His first attempt at earning a livelihood was in his father's store, but the removal of the family to the farm at Granville caused a change in his occupation. At that time, he took up farming and, finding himself adapted to it, adopted it as a life vocation. He was one of the most successful farmers in this part of the town and added to the old farm so that at one time he owned 460 acres. Mr. Terrett was a loyal republican and was selectman of Granville for some time and also held minor offices. he was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church, in which he was an ardent worker and to whose support he liberally contributed. He died...while on a visit in Pittsfield at his daughter's home.

    George married Prudence Chesebrough DENISON on 3 Dec 1822 in Halifax, Vermont. Prudence (daughter of Benadam DENISON and Rhoda RANDALL) was born on 15 Dec 1799 in Stonington, New London Co., Connecticut; died on 1 May 1884 in West Granville, Massachusetts. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    By 1854 George had joined uncles Dudley and Horatio Terrett at 251 Front Street, manhattan, as an importer/dealer of wine and liquors, in which occupation he remained. In 1856, meanwhile, he was an agent in the Wall Street office of Keystone Insurance Co. In 1870 the value of George's estate, real and personal, was $14,000 and $4,000, respectively. His will, dated 30 Dec 1869 and proved 28 Feb. 1873, left everything to his wife, Anna..

    Name:
    Prior to their double wedding, Maria and her twin sister, Mary, taught school in the Ganville Vicinity. Lemuel came to Pittsfield at age 15 and, after a six-year apprenticeship with a maternal uncle, became a highly skilled cabinetmaker. He later established a furniture business and was also Pittsfield's leading undertaker. A "friend of the poor," he was "highly prosperous" and of "unquestioned integrity."

    Like her twin sister, Mary taught school in the Granville area prior to her marriage. On 4 Jan. 1852, she was admitted to the Southwick Congregation Church by letter from Granville's Methodist Episcopal Church. Albert was a wealthy tobacco grower and in 1862-1863 a Southwick selectman.

    Eliza and Sylvester, with two infant children, west west by covered wagon to Chatfield in 1856 and the next year settled on a farm in Elmira, an adjoining, rural township. About a year before Sylvester's death, they moved back to Chatfield, where he engaged in the lumber business. For many years following his death, Eliza often stayed at the Elmira farm before making the Chatfield house her permanent home. Sylvester left real estate valued at $5,785 and personal estate of $1,826.

    When Delia and Edwin married, she was a school teacher and he a peddler. In 1870 they were living in Southwick; he was a farm laborer. In 1880 they were living in Granville; his occupation was "farming " (distinct from farmer). Prior to her death, Delia had been a dressmaker.

    He served in the Civil War from 20 Sept 1861 to 27 Sep 1864 as a private in Company F, 27th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry. Between fall 1862 and spring 1864, he was treated several times, once for some months in a military hospital, for malarial dysentery, piles, and rheumatic fever. At the Battle of Cold harbor, Va., on 3 June 1864, he suffered a severe gunshot wound in his left side.

    Charles took over his father's West Granville farm and remained there until about five years prior to his death, when he mov ed to adjacent Westfield. he was a "very successful farmer,....manage a large dairy," was a "well-known horseman", and for many years was the Hampden Co. deputy sheriff for the town of Granville.

    In Feb. 1873, she joined the Middle Granville Congregational Church by profession of faith. She spent her first 46 years on the family farm, in West Granville, and the remaining 34 in the Pittsfield home of her sister Maria Lloyd and the latter's grandson, Lemuel G. Lloyd.
