    SOLDIER DROWNS IN SPOKANE RIVER
In the construction of a battle practice bridge over the Spokane river a Geiger field soldier lost his life by drowning yesterday. He was Pvt. Edward Vian of Great Falls, Montana.
At 2:30 p.m. a group of aviation engineers was training on the steel cable span over the river when a center cable slipped and tilted the bridge. Pvt. Vian lost his balance and fell into the river.
The bridge is 150 feet from the Riverside park caretaker's house, and R. S. Lawrence, park superintendent, saw the accident. Caught in the rapids, the soldier tried to swim, but the current was to strong and he was carried down the river, Lawrence said.
His body drifted about 600 yeards before reaching the rapids, where it disappeared. His two instructors, Lt. Richard Owens and Pvt. Jack Wilson, took a boat to try to rescue him, but the current upset the boat and they were pulled ashore.
Three hundred men were searching last night along the banks two miles below the Seven-mile bridge for the body.
