    Notes:

    Name:
He graduated 1745 from Harvard College and began his political career in 757 at the death of his father. James served in the Lower House of the Massachusetts General Court and the Provincial Congress (1766-1778), as President of the Provincial Congress (1778), Speaker of the House of Representatives in the General Court (1775-1776) and as Paymaster General of the Continental Army (1776 to 1781) during the American Revolution. The General Court appointed him a Major General in September 1776, for the campaign in Rhode Island, but he refused to serve under a junior officer. James claimed an illness so he did not have to report for duty. General Warren resigned his commission in 1777 from commanding troops in the field but remained the Paymaster General for the Army most of the war, having a close working relationship with General George Washington General Warren suffered politically after the war by being political enemies with the powerful John Hancock. He also grew apart from the positions of John and Samuel Adams as the leaders began forming the new government. James and his wife Mercy strongly felt that many of the beliefs which were the roots of the Revolution, were being lost, as the leaders formalized the government. Hancock used his power to prevent Warren from being elected to office, including Lieutenant Governor of Massachusetts.

James married Mercy OTIS on 14 Nov 1754 in Barnstable, Barnstable County, Massachusetts. Mercy (daughter of Judge James OTIS and Mary ALLYN) was born on 14 Sep 1728 in Barnstable, Barnstable Co., Massachusetts; died on 19 Oct 1814 in Plymouth, Plymouth Co., Massachusetts.
