    Name:
    Considering all established information together, the potential clue found in the Jennings genealogy seems inconclusive. If Mary and Sarah Church were twin daughters of Joseph and Lydia (Randall) Church born in 1738, then this Mary would have been only 13 at the time of Sylvanus Westgate's marriage in 1751. Multiple sources place Mary (Church) Westgate's birth years as 1725. Given Sylvanus's birth in 1719, a wife born in 1725 or 1729 seems more likely than one born in 1738. If Joseph and Lydia (Randall) Church's daughter Mary was actually born in 1729 per the town records, then she and Mary (Church) Westgate may have been the same person. Unfortunately, I was unable to find a living matrilineal descendant of Mary (Church) Westgate to take an mtDNA test, which might have resolved this question.

    Name:
    He married abt. 1769, Joannah Wilbor. She was born in Little Compton 29 May 1732, daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth (Carr) Wilbore. Benjamin's father Joseph Church deeded land on 18 December 1783, to son Benjamin "of Nine Partners, N.Y., a 15-acre lot left me by my uncle Caleb Church," recorded in Little Compton 25 Dec 1783. Benjamin appears as head of household in Washington censuses for 1790, 1800, 1810, 1820 and 1830. the town of Washington had been part of the Great Nine Partners Patent of 1697. Washington was formed in 1788 as one of the original towns of the reorganized county.

    Benjamin made his will and had it witnessed in Washington on 7 July 1824; it was probated there on 23 January 1832. Benjamin mentions sons Samuel, Joseph, and Benjamin, and daughters Martha Church and Elizabeth Stringham. Sons Joseph and Benjamin were appointed executors. Samuel apparently had debts; Benjamin directs in his will "Item: I give and bequeath unto my son Samuel Church all the notes & bonds I have against him..."

    Benjamin makes no mention of his wife Joannah in his will. In his 1810 household no woman of Joannah's age is counted so she had probably died earlier. Although a female in his household in the 1820 census was in Joannah's age cohort (45 and over), this female was likely Benjamin's spinster daughter Martha.

    Benjamin married Joanna WILBOR on 15 Jul 1751. Joanna (daughter of Samuel WILBORE and Elizabeth CARR) was born on 29 May 1732 in Little Compton, Rhode Island. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
