John P.M. RANSOM [1] |
- John P.M. Ransom was the son and third child of Elijah and Miranda Ransom, and oldest grandson of Major Ezekiel Ransom. He was born at Chazy, NY, July 8, 1821. His father was a physician and careful to see that the son secured the best educational advantages the country could furnish, and so John was kept in the school and academy at Chazy until he became of age. He then concluded to cast his lines in the West, and in 1842 he went to Michigan, stopping at Kalamazoo, where he remained nearly a year at work farming and teaching a select school. But the change of climate affected him unfavorably and he returned to Chazy, where he was clerk in a store for a time and afterwards he was employed in same line at Plattsburgh, NY, for several years, and there married Miss Amanda Chalmers about 1846. Soon after that event he moved to Mooers Station. He there went into business on his own account and it proved a lucrative venture. he accumulated a competency for the proverbial rainy day. He also filled the public positions of postmaster and collector of customs at Mooers, giving satisfaction to the government and the people in both. He enlisted in the Union army at the outbreak of the Rebellion as a lieutenant in the regiment, New York Infantry Volunteers. He participated in many battles and at last was so severely wounded as to be disabled for further active service in the field, and was honorably discharged. [1]
