Name |
John WEST [1, 2] |
- Col. John West, served as captain, major and lieutenant colonel of militia, 1652-73, loyal to Governor Berkeley during Bacon's rebellion; member House of Burgesses, died testate (will dated 15 Nov 1689). [1]
- He is purported to be the first white child born on the York River, and in consideration of this fact, was granted land at West Point which was entailed for several generations. (Note: His will of 15 Nov. 1689 was probated about 1691/2. it was destroyed along with the other County records in a fire in 1787.) Colonel John West acquired land in the seventeenth century, where he built a fine, small brick Jacobean lodge before 1690, the East dependency of the manor house. It became known as the Elsing Green plantation. Colonel West's son, Captain Nathaniel West, inherited Elsing Green upon his father's death in 1692. [2]
