- Prominent Fruitland Man Called by Death
Death came Saturday, September 6 to Curtis H.Sargent, 71, prominent Fruitland pioneer resident following a brief illness. Mr. Sargent was well known in this section and throughout the state in fruit growing and dairying circles, having been active in these fields since 1905 when he first came to Idaho.
Funeral services were held Tuesday morning in the Methodist church in Fruitland and were under the direction of the Rev. Walter Coffman of the Fruitland Church of the Brethren of which Mr. Sargent was a member. The Rev. Coffman was assisted in the ceremony by the Rev. H. O. Luscome, Methodist minister. Interment was at the Riverside cemetery, in Payette.
Curtis H. Sargent was born on February 27, 1870 at Dunlap in Lyons County, Kansas, the son of Story L. and Mary [Sowers] Sargent. He was married to Clara Eldredge on August 3, 1898 and in 1905 Mr. and Mrs. Sargent came to Idaho to make their home and engage in the fruit industry.
Mr. Sargent was one of a group of men who later gave the name to the village of Fruitland and for several years he was president of the Fruitland bank. He was also president of the first telephone company in Fruitland and for a time was president of the Idaho State Jersey Cattle Club.
Besides his widow, he is survived by one son, Paul Sargent of McPherson, Kan. and by five daughters, Gladys Sargent and Mrs. William Regan, both of San Francisco, Kathryn Sargent of Fruitland, Mrs. Will Graham of Oklahoma City, Okla. and Mrs. Dan Griffin of Casper, Wyo. He also leaves six grandchildren.(Independent Enterprise, Sept. 11, 1941)
