During the First World War, James served his country in the United States Army. He enlisted July 23, 1918, and served in the 5th Training Battalion, 158th Depot Brigade until October 30, 1918; in the Headquarters Central Department, Chicago, until December 3, 1918; and then home to Camp Sherman, Ohio until his honorable discharge.
