- HINDS, MARSHAL RAY?Marshal Ray Hinds was born to William Carroll Hinds and Mattie Gardner Hinds on May 19, 1916, at Hermleigh, Tx., and passed away on October 18, 1987, at the Fillmore County Hospital in Geneva, at the age of 71 years, 4 months and 29 days. He was one of three children in the family.
He graduated from high school at Perryton, Tx., and received his BA from Texas Wesleyan at Fort Worth, Tx. He obtained his Masters in Theology from the Iliff Seminary in Denver, Co. He was ordained in the Methodist Church in 1949 and served churches in Texas, Colorado, Nebraska and Iowa.
He transferred to the United Church of Christ (Congregational) Nebraska Conference.
He retired in 1979, but occasionally supplied pulpits and was appointed Pastor Emeritus of the Geneva Church at his retirement.
At the time of his death he was serving the Presbyterian Church in Alexandria, making 40 years served in the ministry.
In his younger years he was active in the Boy Scouts, later serving as Scout master and area commissioner.
He was a captain in the Civil Air Patrol.
He served as an instructor in the Dale Carnegie Human Relations and public speaking course. During his ministry in Red Cloud, he served as fund raising chairman of the Willa Cather Memorial.
He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and Geneva Community Grange.
Marshal was married to Eveline Bryan of Perryton, Tx., on September 5, 1936, and to them three children were born.
He had many talents such as music, woodworking, writing, drawing and painting. A favorite of his was playing the trumpet. He had several writings published. His life in the ministry took him to many towns and with his ability to meet people he was readily accepted.
One of the special times in his life was serving as pastor of the Little Brown Church at Nashua, Ia., where he touched the lives of many young couples.
Marshal was preceded in death by his parents and by one sister.
He is survived by his wife, Evaline of Alexandria; by his son Don and wife, Janice of Fremont; daughters, Sarah and husband Wendell, of Alliance, and Nita, and her husband, Patrick of North Platte, sister, Mrs. Ruth McDonald of Albuquerque, N.M.; grandchildren, Stacy Hinds, Jim Hinds and wife, Sharon, Sue Fairbanks, Linda Fairbanks, Nancy Grim and husband, Leo, Amy Arron and Johathon hays; great-grandchildren, Jason and Jennie Novotny.
Funeral services were conducted from the Congregational United Church of Christ in Geneva, on Tuesday, October 20, with the Rev. Charles G. Schepel and the Rev. Clarence M. ("Chip") Higgens Jr. officiating.
Ken Headlee played trumpet solos "Precious Lord" and "Just a Closer Walk with Thee."
Mrs. Don Apley Jr. accompanied Curtis Prater, who sang "The End of a Perfect Day" and "The Lord's Prayer."
Congregational hymns were "Amazing Grace" and "How Great Thou Art."
Those serving as pallbearers were Dail Vorderstrasse, Raymond Kerwood, Frank Heinsch, Gary Mau, Warren Lefever, and Hugh Wilkins.
Interment was in the Geneva public cemetery.
