  • Name Alton Kenneth STEIGER  [2
    • Alton Kenneth Steiger was born to Albert "Buck" Emil Steiger and Clemmie Estel (Norton) Steiger on January 22nd, 1922 at the farm southeast of Leedey, OK. He departed this life on May 21st, 2013 at the age of 91. Alton attended the Prairie Star one-room school for eight years, then graduated from Leedey Schools in 1939. He was drafted into the United States Army on November 23rd, 1942, serving in Europe and the Philippines in World War II. He spent time in Germany after the war ended and was discharged on February 7th, 1946.

Alton made his home in Oklahoma City after the war, doing construction work for the city. Alton later worked for LeeWay Motor Freight Lines and spent 31 years employed with the company. He was a member of the Teamsters Local Union 886. He also joined the American Legion and the VFW. Alton married Gussie Holcomb of Leedey on September 7th, 1944. They were members of Springdale Baptist Church in Oklahoma City. She preceded him in death in 1981. On June 28th, 1996, Alton married Lois (Britton) Hickman. They enjoyed seventeen years of marriage, eventually settling in Yukon, OK.

Alton described himself as "a plain man with a plain plan," and he was a devoted Christian. He enjoyed gardening and taking care of of his yard. In later years he and Lois enjoyed trips to western Oklahoma to visit family and friends. They were also very active in the walking group at the Yukon Community Center. He is preceded in death by his parents Albert and Clemmie, and his sister, Arleta Dodson. He is survived by his wife, Lois, and his stepchildren, Becky and Raymond Hickman. His first cousin Minnie Ommen of Okemah, OK and many other family members also survive him. His nephew, William "Don" Dodson, of Pasadena, CA, and his family, survive him as well. Don says that Alton "was a great man, but he spent no time thinking about himself. He had a heart of gold and more good sense than ten good men. He was loyal and good and always on the path of God. I will miss him in so, so many ways."

In lieu of flowers, Alton requested donations be sent to Cal Farley's Boys Ranch, P. O. Box 1890, Amarillo, TX. 79174.

The graveside service will take place on Friday, May 24th, 2013 at 10:00 am at the Center Point Cemetery east of Leedey.
