Aft 1637 - Abt 1708 (70 years)
-
Name |
Joseph BECKWITH [1] |
- Joseph Beckwith, third son of Matthew (1st), was born later than 1637. His wife Susannah was of a family now unknown. The time of his death is uncertain. A deed from his brother John to Joseph Beckwith, in 1723, of land in Lyme received from their father,"lying in third part of fourth decision," may have been to his son, afterwards Capt. Joseph. If so, he may have died about 1708; but, assuredly not at sixty-eight years old as an enlisted man in a military expedition to a distant wilderness, as has been printed aforetime. His wealth would have procured him exemption from such service had he been thirty years younger. If he died about 1708, as seems most probable, she was his widow who in or about 1716 became Mrs. Susannah Way whose second husband may have been Capt. Joseph Way, who died a few years later. There was a Susannah, dau. of Baltazar De Wolf, who married Henry Champion in 1684, and after his death in July 1704 became the wife of John Huntley Sr., of Lyme, and no namesake is known who could have been wife of Joseph Beckwith (1st); and in fact, Baltazar's daughter herself has been set down quite boldly and quite as absurdly as Joseph's wife. It is mot reasonable to think that either Capt. Joseph or his cousin Joseph, son of Nathaniel bought their uncle Joh 's land at Lyme in 1723. [1]
