  • Name Elizabeth BARKER  [1, 2
    • Elizabeth Barker, the 'Mayflower' passenger, b. ca. 1593, probably in Chattisham, Suffolk. On 19 Sept 1605, as an underage minor, she and her sister Mary appeared at the Chattisham manorial court session, seeking to be admitted to their inheritance: their deceased father Samuel's 1 acre of arable land south of Talbots in Chattisham, and 3 rods of arable land lying in Slyfield in Chattisham, which he had purchased in 1580. They paid their fee and were admitted as tenants. Their fealty (required service to the manor lord) was respited until they came of age. She appears, with her stepmother, on the recusancy lists of the Archdeaconry of Suffolk, beginning on 13 March 1607/8, and continuing through 1615. She removed sometime shortly thereafter to Leiden, Holland, where she and Edward Winslow were betrothed, with banns being posted there in 1618 on 28 April, 5 May, and 12 May. She was named as heir to her stepmother's estate at the manorial court in Chattisham on 10 September 1619. She made a will on 30 Sept 1619 in Leiden, discovered by Dr. Jeremy Bangs, and presented in the following article. In the will, Elizabeth indicates she is very sick, but still able to stand and walk. She mentions half-siblings Daniel Bardall and Sarah Bardall, and Sarah's eldest daughter Sarah Manchar. Elizabeth seemingly recovered, as she and Edward Winslow subsequently traveled to Chattisham, where she personally came before the steward of the manor of Chattisham, James Whitelock, and transferred her landholdings that she had inherited, to Robert Book, gentleman. Robert Brook appeared at the next manorial court on 4 Sep. 1621 to confirm the arrangement and formally take possession. Elizabeth (Barker) Winslow came on the "Mayflower" with her husband but died late in the first winter at Plymouth on 24 March 1620/1. Widower Edward Winslow then remarried first winter widow, 'Mayflower' passenger Susanna (Jackson) White, on 12 May 1621. She was the widow of William White. [1]
