    Notes:

    Name:
John Baldwin, of Stonington, Connecticut, was son of Sylvester, who died on the passage to American, 21 June 1638, and brother of Richard, of Milford. His identity is established, beyond all question, by legal proceedings after the death of his son John. He was baptized in Parish Aston Clinton, County Bucks, England, 28 October 1635, and no doubt then quite young. Sylvester Baldwin's family being part of the "new haven Company," moved to that place. John was married to his first wife in 1656. According to he records, a home lot, of an acre and a half, was assigned to him, and he received other grants of land in Milford. His first wife died in 1657, soon after the birth of her son John. Miss Calkins says his name appears in the New London records occasionally after 1654. His descendants, John D., of Worcester, says 1664. He was in Milford in 1658, and one of the heroes of New London, who had the strife with men of Lyme, in 1671, about the boundary line. On the 24th of July, 1672, he married Rebecca Palmer, daughter of the first Walter Palmer, of Stonington, and young widow of Elisha Cheesborough. They settled in Stonington, where she owned a large tract of land. She outlived him about thirty years, and died May 2, 1713.

John the father, died 19 August, 1683. John Baldwin was in the famous difference between New London and Lyme. A meadow at Black Point, claimed by both towns, had been reserved by each for the respective clergymen of the towns. The war was in 1671. About thirty New London men, among whom were the leading persons in the town, went to mow the grass for their minister, and were met and resisted by a party from Lyme, there on a similar errand for 'their' minister. there was strife; and constables were there, and justices too, so that warrants and arrests were well mixed up with blows. A general melee took place, wit no very great harm. The cooler heads finally agreed to let the law decide the matter, and "drank a dram together with some seeming friendship." Each party was indicted; and as no disinterested men could be found in that county, the were tried at Hartford - twenty-one men of New London, and fifteen of Lyme. The town of New London was fined L15, and Lyme L9.

John Baldwin was complained of by a Lyme man for bruising him with a cudgel. President Dwight says the two towns agreed to submit it to a combat, two being selected by each, of whom the Lyme champions beat. This late appeal to "wager of battle" is dubious.

John married Rebecca PALMER on 24 Jul 1672 in Stonington, New London, Connecticut, USA. Rebecca (daughter of Walter PALMER and Rebecca SHORT) died on 02 May 1713 in Stonington, New London, Connecticut, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  1. 8.  Sylvester BALDWIN was born in England (son of Sylvester BALDWIN and Jane WELLS); died in Jun 1638 in on the ship "Martin" during the voyage.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Fact: Son of Sylvester Baldwin and Jane Wells or Willis
    • Death: 21 Jul 1638, on the ship "Martin"

    Notes:

    Name:
He was well off and left a liberal provision for his wife and children, all of whom were with him except Richard, "on the maine ocean, bound for new England." He devised by his muncupative will, certain estates in England to his wife, Sarah. One of these estates she subsequently conveyed by deed to Edward Baldwin of Guilford, co. Surrey, England, describing it as having been "indentured" to Richard Baldwin of St. Leonard's in the parish of Aston Clinton, for 1000 years, and by the said Richard bequeathed to Sylvester and by him to her. The latest date at which he appears in England is November 29, 1636, when he proved his uncle Richard's will, and he was then described as of Aston Clinton. That appears to have been his only residence, as his children were baptized and those who died, buried there. He received a substantial estate from his uncle Richard, whose will is printed in full in the New England Rec., 38, p. 167. Savage makes him son of this uncle and the father of John Baldwin of Milford, 1639. "Among the first settlers at Milford, Connecticut were Timothy, Joseph, John and Richard Baldwin, all of whom were at that time or soon after, heads of families. According to the Milford records, nathaniel and Timothy were brothers, and it is known that Richard had only one brother, John, who at the time of settlement was about six years of age. Richard and the younger John, were sons of Sylvester Baldwin, who died on the ocean in 1638, and were born in the parish of Aston Clinton, in the county Bucks, England. As the Milford settlers came over with the New Haven Company, it is a reasonable supposition that the Baldwins among them were nearly connected and were from London and its vicinity; the counties of Buck and Surrey."

    Notes:

    Name:
"I with my wife and four children came safely to New England June ye 8; 1635 for ever praysed be the god of Heaven my god and king." Arrived at Charlestown, Massachusetts, age 31, with pregnant wife and four children aged one to seven; removed to Hingham, Massachusetts by the following September, joining his father and brothers, who had arrived in New England in 1633.

Peter Hobart is the son of EDMOND HOBART, and first wife MARGARET DEWEY. Borther of EDMUND HOBART, THOMAS HOBART, ALICE HOBART wife of THOMAS CHUBBUCK, and JOSHUA HOBART. Name also spelled Hobert, Hubbard, Hubbert.

    Admitted Freeman 2 Sept. 1635.

Involved in the great controversy of 1645 that began when the local train band elected Bozoun Allen as their lieutenant replacing Anthony Eames. After a number of scuffles between Eames and Allen's followers (including Peter Hobart's bothers Edmund, Joshua, and Thomas), Eames complained to the magistrates in Boston. A warrant was issued for the three Hobart brothers and others who were deemed the leaders of the coup, bringing Rev. Peter to Boston "using such high words that the Magistrates told him that only their respect for his Ministry saved him from being committed." The disagreement touched on a sore point between the Boston magistrates and church authorities and the local town leaders who insisted they could choose their own officers. The men were required to give bond against appearance at court. Deputy Governor John Winthrop tried to make them see the error of their ways, but eventually arrested them a few weeks later for refusing to give the bond.

Eighty-one Hingham men, with Peter Hobart's name as the first, presented a petition to the General Court asking it to hear the case. the proceedings took seven weeks and included accusations against Winthrop for false imprisonment. Winthrop spoke in his own defense at the court, but the magistrates and deputies were split between those who agreed that the magistrates exercised too much power, endangering the people's liberty, and those who felt authority was being flaunted and would bring down the colony. The matter went back and forth between the magistrates and the deputies, at one point talk of arbitration fro the elders entered the picture, but eventually the political factions agreed to censure everyone and levy some modest fines. Rev. Hobart was fined, L2, apparently for being "y first subscribed ye peticon." However, when the marshal went to Hingham to collect the fines, he was resisted, and what he did collect was "rescued" from him. Pastor Hobart was called back to court and accused of "seditious practice and a derogation and contempt of authority" in encouraging the resistance, Hobart asked for a trial by jury, which found that e "seemed to be ill-affected toward this government, and that his speeches tended to sedition and contempt..." The court fined him L20 and ordered him to give bond against his "good behavior" until the next court. "It is said that at this sentence his spirit rose; he would like to know what the "good behavior" was..."
