  1. 1.  Capt William SOUTHWORTH was born in 1659 in Duxbury, Plymouth County, Massachusetts (son of Constant SOUTHWORTH and Elizabeth COLLIER); died on 25 Jun 1719 in Little Compton, Rhode Island.

    Name:
    He lived in Duxbury, Little Compton and Bristol, Rhode Island. He was a deputy in Duxbury 1654-63 and 1671-82, a selectman there 1672-75 and 1683-85. He owned much land in Little Compton and was there in 1686. He lived on Swamp Road on the place known as the Franklin C. Southworth place. All of his children are entered on the records of the Church of Christ in Bristol, as baptized 29 June 1709.

    He gave land to his sons Samuel, Thomas, Stephen, Benjamin and Andrew; and to Gideon he gave his dwelling house, orchard and land. With his wife Martha he gave Joseph and his wife Mary Blague a dwelling house, orchard and 26 acres of upland, with a sawmill standing upon the cornmill stream with 42 acres of upland on the west side of that stream and 20 acres of upland adjoining the land of Reynolds Marvin, with 10 acres meadow known by the name of the Fresh Meadow. In his will, recorded in Taunton, made 8 May 1719 and proved 24 Aug. 1719, he left to his wife Martha "her third as the law allows"; 20 pounds each to sons Joseph, Edward Thomas and Gideon; to son Samuel 5 pounds; to son Nathaniel 400 pounds; to son Benjamin 10 shillings; to daughter Elizabeth 60 pounds; to daughter Alice 70 pounds; to son Stephen one half of his Negro man called Cuff and one cow, and to son Andrew the other half of his Negro man called Cuff. He also mentioned his grandsons William and Constant Southworth. He named his friend Lt. John Wood to be one of his executors along with his sons Joseph and Samuel. An inventory of his estate lists one Negro man called Cuff, one Negro woman called Sue and one Negro woman called Kate, two houses and one hundred acres of land with 2000 pounds, with the estate totaling 2593 pounds.

    In her will his widow left 5 shillings each to her sons Joseph Blague and Samuel Blague, "...To sons Gideon Southworth and Andrew Southworth the rest and residue. To son Andrew my Negro girl named Kate and my silver tankard, to daughter mary Southworth my wearing apparel, to grandson William Southworth my young heifer that came of that cow I had of Stephen Wilcox, to granddaughter Mary Blague my satinet gown and short apron..." Her son-in-law Joseph Southworth was named sole executor.

    William married Rebecca PABODIE in 1680. Rebecca (daughter of William PABODIE and Elizabeth ALDEN) was born on 16 Oct 1660 in Duxbury, Plymouth, Massachusetts, USA; died on 03 Dec 1702 in Little Compton, Rhode Island. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  1. 2.  Constant SOUTHWORTH was born about 1612 in Leyden, Holland (son of Edward SOUTHWORTH and Alice CARPENTER); died on 11 Mar 1678/9 in Duxbury, Plymouth County, Massachusetts.

    Besides the land that he owned in Duxbury, he had land in Tiverton and Little Compton. From his position as treasurer he had an opportunity to know what land was of value and opportunities to select his land. He came to Little Compton with William Pabodie at its settlement and surveyed much of the land there. His will, made 27 Feb 1678 and proved in March 1678/9: "....To wife Elizabeth Southworth during her terme of live this dwelling house with out-housing and mill belonging and all uplands and meddowes lying within the town of Duxburrow or Marshfield for her support and comfort. To son Edward Southworth after the decease of my aforesaid wife my aforesaid dwelling house with out-housing and mill. Also twelve pounds in money. To son Nathaniel Southworth the one halfe share of lands that lyeth neare Taunton by name of Ffreeman's lands. To three daughters Marcye Ffreeman, Alice Church and Mary Alden, my other one half share of the Ffreeman's lands. To my daughter Elizabeth Southworth my next best bed and furniture, provided she doe not marry William Fobbes but if she doe then to have five shillings. To daughter Prissila Southworth my next best bed and furniture. Unto my son William Southworth my next best bed. To my grandson Constant Ffreeman and all those lands and meddows that I have at a place called Pawomett in the town of Eastham. To my cosen Elizabeth Howland, my brother Thomas his daughter five pounds. All the rest and residue to my beloved wife, and she to be sole executrix..."
