    An Old Settler Suddenly Called

Mr. U. S. Slawson, aged 72 years suddenly departed this life on Sunday morning Dec. 17, 1899, at about two o'clock.

The deceased had complained for about a week but his symptoms were not considered alarming as they were periodical, only lasting a few moments, and he continued his usual occupation of barbering Saturday evening up to a few hours previous to his death. Feeling rather poorly he retired at 7 o'clock. At nine he complained of being worse and his wife rendered all relief possible but all was of no avail and he fell asleep in Jesus a few moments past 2 o'clock, of organic heart trouble as pronounced by Dr. J. M. Evans.

Mr. Slawson was born in Chautauqua Co. N. Y., in 1827. He came to Walworth Co. Wisconsin in 1844 and purchased a farm in Harmony in 1848. In 1850, he moved to Magnolia and in 1863 he came to this city where he has since lived.

He was married to Miss Sabria McCoy of Magnolia on April 25, 1850, the fruits of which union are a son, Geo. E., whose home is here and a daughter Alice M., wife of Rev. F. N. Eldredge, now residing in Des Moines, Iowa.

Mr. Slawson has been a christian since early life and had great faith in the God he loved. His many virtues as a good citizen are too well known to need calling to mind. He was a man of a jovial, pleasant nature and gave good cheer to all with whom he came in contact. He will be greatly missed by the entire community but he now has a much better place as a reward for his loving, faithful, christian life.

The sorrowing wife and children have the deepest sympathy of their large circle of friends in this their sad bereavement.

The funeral was held from the late home Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 and from the M. E. church of which he was a member at 2:00 o'clock. Rev. Webster Millar officiated, assisted by Revs. H. Sewell, and M. C. Miner.

On last Monday the mortal remains of Mrs. Sabria S. Slawson were brought here from Des Moines, Ia. for burial in the Maple Hill cemetery. Old residents of Evansville will remember that Mr. and Mrs. Uriah Slawson were formerly residents of our city, and that they removed to Iowa. Mr. Slawson died about twenty years ago, and the family have a lot in the local burial ground. The body of Mrs. Slawson was brought here by the son, George E. Slawson. They were met at the depot by a number of relatives, among whom were Mr. and Mrs. G. L. McCoy, of Evansville, Clyde McCoy and daughter Lucinda, of Evansville, and Mrs. E. H. Mattice of Footville. The deceased was nearly 86 years of age. In her younger years she had been an active worker in church circles, both local and evangelistic, and passed peacefully away in the faith that looks beyond all that is perishable. Brief services were held at the cemetery, Rev. A. W. Barnlund of the Methodist church having these in charge.
