In 1844 came West of the town of Elgin, called Almora and bought 80 acres. Here he built a log cabin and began to farm. In the seasons when he could not farm, he got a teaching job which brought in more money to buy mor land. In 1845 returned to the East and brought his family in an oxen-driven wagon.
In 1846 bought the estate of Malcolm Mc Millian; first land was bought from Samuel Willaby.
He has owned 300 acres; valued as of 1878 as $75 per acre. He had bought the land from settlers who did not have the skill he had in making the land yield big crops.
By 1883, he had built a beautiful new home for his large family on the Big Timber Road. All the lumber was hauled from Chicago. The floors downstairs were inlaid with walnut and maple. A buttery as large as some kitchens was an outstanding feature. His home was considered one of the finest residences in the township. (Kane Co., Dundee)

Was one of the original pro-salvery men, at a time when it was worth something to hold such views.

    Notes:

Things were not easy for Prudence the first years after arriving at the log cabin. She was a very courageous pioneer woman. The Indians really pestered her and there were many of them living near the cabin. Every time taht she baked bread, the Pottowatomies whose sense of smell was keen, would come in flocks to get a handout as soon as the bread was taken out of the oven. They also liked cooked meat of chickens and enjoyed running down the biggest and the fattest of the flock. Many wore the Indian artifacts the Padelford family collected in those early days and throughout the years.
