  1. 1.  Rev Henry GREENE was born about 1618 in County Essex, England; died in 11Oct 1648 in Reading, Massachusetts.

    Name:
    He entered Emmanuel College, Cambridge, England, in 1635, but withdrew before proceeding to a degree. He emigrated to New England about 1640, located in Watertown, Mass., and was admitted a freeman 13 May 1642. In 1643 he declined an offer in the ministry at Martha's Vineyard, but on 5 Nov. 1645 was ordained the first pastor of the church in Reading, Mass., where he d. 11 Oct. 1648. According to Gov. Winthrop, Mr. Greene was "a very Godly man"; so doubtless he was strictly "orthodox" according to the Puritan standard. His widow m. (2) about December, 1648, as his second wife, Dea. John Horne (later Orne), b. in England about 1602, one of the founders in 1630 of Salem, Mass., where he served as deacon over half a century and d. 1684.

    Henry married Frances STONE about 1645. Frances (daughter of Rev Simon STONE and Joanne CLARK) was christened on 20 Jan 1618/9 in Great Bromley, Essex, England. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
