He remained in England with his two sisters until the family had effected a settlement in this country; they came over within ten years after, but the exact time of their arrival we have not been able to ascertain. 2. 3.  Martha PITKIN was born in 1638 in England (daughter of ? PITKIN and Unknown ?); died on 13 Oct 1719.

    Notes:

    Name:
Martha Pitkin, sister of Mr. William Pitkin, the progenitor of the Pitkins in America, and of Roger Pitkin of London, was born in England in 1638. She followed her brother to America in 1661, to return with him England, "not once supposing he intended to remain in the wilderness," as she expressed it. Her first greeting on meeting her brother, whom she found feeding his swine was, "I left a brother in England serving his king, and find another in America serving his swine." She was a lady endowed with more than ordinary talent, improved by an excellent education. The reception she met with in the colony, was most flattering; her comely form and accomplished manner making the colonists anxious to retain her in their country. In the words of the Rev. Thomas Robbins, for many years the pastor of the church she attended, "this girl put the colony in commotion. If possible sh must be detained. The stock was too valuable to be parted with. It became a matter of general consultation what young man was good enough for Miss Pitkin. Tradition says that so many young man wished to marry the accomplished beauty, that they cast los for her hand, but fails to say what part Miss Pitkin was to take in the affair. The facts are, that the sons of Henry Wolcott, one of the first settlers of East Windsor, were well pleased with Miss Pitkin, and to avoid all question of strife or jealousy, it is believed it was decided by lot among themselves which one should sue for her hand. The lot fell to Simon Wolcott, the youngest son; at all events, he pressed his suit, and was successful. Her brother favored the match, and she became the wife of Simon Wolcott, and subsequently the mother of Governor Roger Wolcott, grandmother of Governor Oliver Wolcott, and great-grandmother of the second Governor Oliver Wolcott and of Governor Roger Griswold. Governor Ellsworth was also a lineal descendant. Her grand-daughter married Governor Matthew Griswold.

It was stated in the funeral sermon of Governor Roger Wolcott, her ninth child, "that he never went to school, but was educated by his mother in her own dwelling."

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Fact: Son of John Wolcott of Tolland near Taunton, Somersetshire, England

    Notes:

    Name:
By the decease of his elder brother, Christopher, in 1639, he inherited the family estate including the manor house Galdon Hall, but this occurred after his removal to America. The earlier part of his life was spent in the ordinary pursuits of a country gentleman, but becoming converted to Puritanism, he, like hundreds of others, sought refuge in America. Although past 52 years of age at the time and with a family of young children, he joined the part of Maverick and Warham, which emigrated in 1630. it is said he had visited New England two years earlier and returned for his family. He took with him his wife and three sons, leaving behind two daughters and the youngest son, aged 5. On October 19th of this same year, his name appears in a list of those desiring to be made Freemen of Boston and he was sworn May 14, 1634. May 14, 1634, the General Court of Massachusetts granted him and two others liberty "to looke out fiermes for themselves," etc. He first settled at Dorchester, but in 1636 left that place with Warham's party to found Windsor. In February, 1637-8 he was appointed collector of the Rates for Windsor and April 11, 1639, he was one of the so-called Committee of the General Court. At the court of Election held april 13, 1643, he became a magistrate or Assistant, to which office he was annually chosen until his death. After the pastor, he was the most important citizen of Windsor. he is one of the twelve whom Trumbull calls the civil and religious Fathers of Connecticut. It has been said that he inherited a considerable estate in England, but these accounts have doubtless been exaggerated. At his death, his property was inventoried at L764-8-10. In the ancient "Family Chronologie," it is recorded of him and his wife, "these both dyed in hops and Ly buried under one tomb in Windsor." (N.E. reg., 9 p. 338; Ibid., 5, pp. 463-4; Stiles' Ancient Windsor, 2, p. 799; N.E. Reg., I, p. 251; Address by the Rev.
