The Connecticut river was then the highway of commerce, and Rocky Hill was an important business center. He owned one of the 2 shipyards, and is mentioned as a noted shipwright in connection with boats built in the early part of the 19th century, among them the brig "Mary", 1805, the schooner "Nancy", 1807, the brig "Dispatch," 1808, and the schooner "Archer," 1810. these ere all engaged in foreign trade. His house was on the old shipyard reservation north of the present railroad station.

4. | Elisha BELDEN was born about 1736 (son of Elisha BELDEN and ? UNKNOWN); died on 29 Sep 1813. Notes:
Elisha was married to _____, who survived him, dying at Berlin, July11, 1817, in her 87th year. On March 20, 1757,Elisha enlisted as a private in Captain Eliphalet Whittlesey's company of General Lyman's regiment of 1,400 picked men, campaign of that year against the French and Indians, and served 33 weeks and 6 days. He enlisted under the same captain and general agin in 1759 in the successful expedition against Ticonderoga and Cron Point, serving 36 weeks and 4 days. He must have married shortly after returning from this campaign. When the "Lexington Alarm" sounded through the colony in 1775, though he had become the father of a numerous family, his martial spirit was aroused again and he enrolled himself among those who were ready to fight. His name is also found on the lists in 1778, so that he is entitled to be called a soldier of the revolution, though he did not serve for any length of time.
