  1. 1.  Lockwood MONTROSS was born on 4 Feb 1806 in Salem, Westchester Co., New York (son of Abraham MONTROSS and Martha SLAWSON); died on 31 Dec 1883.

    Notes:

    Name:
Lockwood was "bound out" at 10 years of age to a brother of his mother Patty Slawson in Bedford town, Westchester Co. After his first marriage he lived for 9 years in Rye town, Westchester Co., probably farming on rented land. On 1 Aug 1836 he purchased in South Salem town, Westchester Co., 34 acres, part of the farm of Stephen and Rebecca Merritt, for $784.54. On 29 Mar. 1837 he mortgaged this place for $500 and paid off the mortgage 2 months later. Then in November he sold it for $950 (Deeds, WCNY 75:154; 108:164) and shipped his goods by the Hudson and Delaware Rivers to Binghamton, NY. His son George Lockwood Montross had the bills of lading when we visited him in November 1951.

Lockwood began the new chapter in his life as a farmer and shoemaker at Page Brook in Chenango town, Broome Co., NY, where he appears in the 1850 census with real estate worth $1,000. The earliest record of Lockwood's land purchases in Brome Co., shows him buying the $125 on 17 Dec 1851 a 41 acre tract, which he sold 10 years later for $1,900 (Deeds, Broome Co. 37:174; 58:431).

Meanwhile, in 1856 Lockwood's first wife died. His brother Marlin, at loose ends after the failure of his grocery store in New York City, brought his daughter Mary and kept house for Lockwood for a while until, in early 1857, Lockwood went to Deposit and sold groceries in Home's store. There he met and married Jane Van Schoyk, whose parents kept a hotel in Deposit. Her parents were among the early settlers of Delaware Co., her mother Nancy Eggleston relating that as a child perhaps a out 1808, she lost her shoes while crossing he Mohawk River on their migration.

In 1861 Jane inherited her parents' hotel in Deposit, and she and Lockwood made their residence there. This hotel was used as a funeral home in 1951. Jane's mother apparently continued to operate the hotel since Lockwood was listed as a shoemaker in the New York State census of 1865, his real estate valued at $1,700; in 1870 it was valued at $2,800 and he had personal property worth $175; his mother-in-law as then living with them. In 1873 they sold the hotel property and purchased a 65 acre farm in Tompkins town near Deposit for $2,300, adding 13 acres in 1879 (Deeds, Delaware Co. 79:598; 87:415, 416).

Lockwood's will, made 15 Dec 1883 and proved 17 Mar 1884, left to his wife Jane (1) $800 which she had advanced t him for real estate purchases and (2) the use of all his property until is son George Lockwood reached 21. He left $200 to his great-granddaughter Elizabeth Rittenburg upon her reaching 21; if she died earlier, this sum was to go to his living children Ella, Stephen, and George. Jane was executrix.

Jane made her will 11 mar 1889; it was proved 13 Feb 1892. She left all her property both real and personal to her son George, subject to a bequest of $1,000 to her son Stephen, to be paid within a year after her death (Deeds, Delaware Co. 117:1).
