    As early as 1720 his father had purchased 70 acres of land from John Budd on "Budd's Neck," at Rye, near to Mamaroneck, Westchester County (then known as "the Little Neck"). This farm in 1751 was conveyed to John Carpenter, "hatter," by John Carpenter, "Senior," of Oyster Bay, on the "Is'l of Nassau."
