  1. 1.  Rev Samuel WHITING was born on 22 Apr 1670; was christened on 24 Apr 1670 in Hartford, Hartford Co., Connecticut (son of Rev John WHITING and Sybil COLLINS); died on 27 Sep 1725 in Enfield, Grafton Co., New Hampshire.

    Name:
    Samuel Whiting received his early education from his father, and afterwards finished his education for the ministry under the direction of Rev. James Fitch, of Norwich, there being no College in Connecticut. He was the first minister of Windham, Conn. In a record kept by him, (now in possession of one of his descendants in Hartford,) he says,'I preached my first sermon at Windham, from the first verse of Genesis, on the first day of January, 1692-3'. 'I was ordained at Windham, on the 4th day of December, 1700.' Rev. Mr. Whiting died at Enfield, while on a visit to his cousin, Rev. Nathaniel Collins, September 27, 1725. (Mr. Collins was also his brother-in-law, having married Alice Adams the sister of his wife.)

  1. 2.  Rev John WHITING was born about 1634 in England (son of William WHITING and Susannah ?); died on 8 Sep 1689 in Hartford, Hartford Co., Connecticut.

    He graduated from Harvard in 1653; preached several years at Salem, Mass., and was there in1659, March 8, when the selectmen, with the deacons and Mr. Gedney, all desired "to treat with Mr. Whittinge to know his mind about staying with them." (Salem town records.) He removed with his family from "The Bay" to Hartford, and was ordained pastor over he First Church in 1660, being associated with Rec. Samuel Stone. In 1669, in consequence of dissensions which agitated the church at that time, he and others petitioned the Assembly "for their approbation for a distance walking in Congregational Church order," which was approved and in 1670, a new Church was formed, of which he was chosen pastor and so continued until his death. In King Philip's War he was chaplain. He was twice married; (1) about 1654 to Sybil Collins, dau. of Deacon Edward Collins of Cambridge, mass., by whom he had seven children, one of whom, Col. William, was a distinguished military officer who fought in all the French and Indian Wars of his time, and who m. Oct. 6, 1686, Mary, dau. of Col. John Allyn, grand-daughter of Matthew Allyn, and great-grand-daughter of Hon. Wm. Pynchon. T

    John's father, William Whiting, was one of the founders of Hartford. The family emigrated from England to Hartford in 1636. John graduated from Harvard, Class of 1653. He served as minister in Salem, Massachusetts, until about 1660, when he moved to Hartford, and became minister of the First church there. he became a freeman on 11 May 1665. His estate began probate in Hartford in November 1689.
