    Notes:

Fontevrault Abbey was founded in 1099 by Robert d'Abrissel, a Breton hermit, who believed that women made better administrators than men. Monks and nuns from the highest families inhabited Fontevrault under the leadership of an abbess. Philippa of Toulouse was a passionate follower of d'Abrissel and more than likely assisted in the founding and works of the abbey. Burials in the abbey church include Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitaine, their daughter, Joanna, and their son, Richard I. Isabel of Angouleme, wife of Joh, King of England, is also buried there. The abbey was suppressed in 1792 and became, under Napolean, a prison. In 1963, the prison was closed and restoration work was begun.
