  1. 1.  John COITE was born in Glamorganshire, Wales; died on 29 Aug 1659 in New London, New London, Connecticut, USA.

    Name:
    John Coit, the first of the name in America, came over, probably, from Glamorganshire, Wales, between 1630 and 1638. he was in Salem, Mass., where he had a grant of land, in 1638. He removed in 1644 to Gloucester, where he was selectman in 1648, and his son John's name also appears there, on the records, at the same time. John Coit senior had his residence at the end of the neck of house-lots now called Wheeler's Point, where, and on Planter's neck, he had considerable land. He was admitted freeman in 1647 and selectman in 1648. He received a grand of land in New London, Ct., in 1650. the records of that town say: "On the 19th of October, 1650, grants were made to Mr. Blynman, Obadiah Bruon, Hugh Caukin, Hugh Roberts, John Coite, Andrew Lester, James Avereye, Robert Isbell." These were all from Gloucester, Mass., situated upon the peninsula Cape Ann, and hence the section in New London were lots were assigned them was called "Cape Ann's Lane."...

    He married Mary Ganners or Jenners in England, where all his children were born previous to his emigration to America. " Mr. Jon Coit died (vide Miss Calkins' history of New London, page 275) Aug. 29, 1659. Mrs. Mary Coit died Jan'y 2, 1676, aged eighty...
