    Notes:

    Find A Grave:

Ferdinand Carroll was born in Erie County, Pennsylvania, March 23, 1819, and died Sunday at noon, February 14, 1904, lacking only about a month of being 85 years of age. He moved from Pennsylvania to Wisconsin in 1865, and to Iowa in 1875, settling in this country on a farm two miles West of Sumner, where he lived until 1884 when he moved into town. In 1846 he was married to Lorind Thompson, in Pennsylvania, and five sons and one daughter were born to them, all of whom are living in or near Sumner. Mrs. Lorinda Carroll died in 1884 and then Mr. Carroll came to live with his daughter, Mrs. William Green, in Sumner, with whom he resided for two years when he was married to Mrs. Liza Neuendorf, who survives him. Mr.Carroll had four brothers and six sisters all of whom survive him with the exception of two sisters.
Mr. Carroll was almost a life long member of the Methodist church, having joined that denomination in 1854, and for years he has been a faithful member of the church in this city and he was always to be found in attendance up to three years ago when his hearing became so bad he had to give up what to him was much more than a duty. He was only sick for a week before his death, which was due to old age. To not many men is it given to round out more than four score years, and the advanced age speaks well for the good habits and righteous living of the deceased.
A remarkable fact about this family is that they are reputed to be the oldest family in the state, as their average age, including the deceased, was over 75. Mr. Carroll had 24 living grand children and three greatgrandchildren. The funeral was held at the M. E. church Tuesday afternoon, the pastor, Rev. Bretnell, preaching the funeral sermon from the text; "Blessed are they which do die in the Lord and their works do follow with them."
