Name:
Matthew, born about 1637; died at Lyme, June 4, 127, aged 90; (will dated march 19, 1714/5). He went fro Guilford to New London in 1671, and to Lyme in 1676. Marries 1st Elizabeth, perhaps at Guilford, where two sons were born; 2d, at Lyme in 1691, Elizabeth Griswold, divorced wife of John Rogers ands widow of Peter Pratt; 3d Sarah, (named in his will, - dated March 19, 1714/5). As to his first and third wives will as copied runs: "To Sarah, my dearly beloved wife &c... To my seven children which I had by my first wife (naming them and omitting John)." In town record of New London, vol. i, p. 7, are three entries of birth-date; namely, for James, Jonah, and Prudence, - each one written son or daughter of Matthew and Elizabeth. In an entry at Saybrook, vol. iv. p. 162, deed dated Jn. 30, 1728/9, Mrs. Sarah Beckwith mentions son Thomas Starkey; whence it is here inferred the Widow Sarah Starkey was third wife of Matthew Beckwith.

1. James BECKWITH was born on 1 Jun 1671 in New London, New London Co., Connecticut; was christened on 10 Sep 1671; died about 1756 in Farmington, Connecticut.

Matthew married Elizabeth GRISWOLD in 1691 in Lyme, Connecticut. Elizabeth (daughter of Matthew GRISWOLD and Anna WOLCOTT) was born about 1652; died in Jul 1727. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Matthew, born in England about 1610; bought a home-lot at Hartford, of William Pratt, in 1645; removed about 1652 to New London and Lyme, - his land lying in both towns, (house in Lyme); Killed by accident, )ct. 21, 1680. His estate, from inventory made Dec. 13, 1682, was valued at L293 10s. Elizabeth, his widow, was married to Samuel Buckland, and died before 1690.
