  1. 1.  Elizabeth BARKER was born about 1593 (daughter of Samuel BARKER and Sarah BEDELL); died on 24 Mar 1620/1 in Plymouth, Plymouth, Massachusetts, USA.

    Notes:

    Name:
Elizabeth Barker, the 'Mayflower' passenger, b. ca. 1593, probably in Chattisham, Suffolk. On 19 Sept 1605, as an underage minor, she and her sister Mary appeared at the Chattisham manorial court session, seeking to be admitted to their inheritance: their deceased father Samuel's 1 acre of arable land south of Talbots in Chattisham, and 3 rods of arable land lying in Slyfield in Chattisham, which he had purchased in 1580. They paid their fee and were admitted as tenants. Their fealty (required service to the manor lord) was respited until they came of age. She appears, with her stepmother, on the recusancy lists of the Archdeaconry of Suffolk, beginning on 13 March 1607/8, and continuing through 1615. She removed sometime shortly thereafter to Leiden, Holland, where she and Edward Winslow were betrothed, with banns being posted there in 1618 on 28 April, 5 May, and 12 May. She was named as heir to her stepmother's estate at the manorial court in Chattisham on 10 September 1619. She made a will on 30 Sept 1619 in Leiden, discovered by Dr. Jeremy Bangs, and presented in the following article. In the will, Elizabeth indicates she is very sick, but still able to stand and walk. She mentions half-siblings Daniel Bardall and Sarah Bardall, and Sarah's eldest daughter Sarah Manchar. Elizabeth seemingly recovered, as she and Edward Winslow subsequently traveled to Chattisham, where she personally came before the steward of the manor of Chattisham, James Whitelock, and transferred her landholdings that she had inherited, to Robert Book, gentleman. Robert Brook appeared at the next manorial court on 4 Sep. 1621 to confirm the arrangement and formally take possession. Elizabeth (Barker) Winslow came on the "Mayflower" with her husband but died late in the first winter at Plymouth on 24 March 1620/1. Widower Edward Winslow then remarried first winter widow, 'Mayflower' passenger Susanna (Jackson) White, on 12 May 1621. She was the widow of William White.

Elizabeth married Edward WINSLOW before 12 May 1618 in Leyden, England. Edward (son of Edward WINSLOW and Magdalene OLLYVER) was born on 18 Oct 1595 in Droitwich, England; died on 7 May 1655 in At Sea. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Fact: Son of Peter and Joan Barker

    Notes:

    Name:
Samuel Barker was born say 1551, probably in Wimbish, Essex, and died between 26 February 1598/9 and 16 January 1600/1, probably at Chattisham or East Bergholt, Suffolk. He married first SARAH ( ) BEDALL (possibly Beddell or Bardwell), who was the mother of his children. The only record of her was wen she was enumerated in the 26 February 1598/9 recusancy list of East Bergholt with her husband. Her married second ELIZABETH ? between 26 February 1598/9 and 16 January 1600/1, and Samuel himself died sometime within that same timeframe. Elizabeth was named several times as Samuel's widow; however, the recusancy lists are known to contain naming errors, so it is possible that the 598/9 list listed Samuel Barker's wife as Sarah in error, when she actually was named Elizabeth. If this is true, then Samuel had only one wife, ELIZABETH (BARDALL) BARKER, who was the other of his children. Nevertheless, we will refer to the children of Samuel Barker as the stepchildren of his widow Elizabeth....

Samuel married Sarah BEDELL. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
