- Death Claims Former Pilot on Missouri
Glasgow, Sept. 30 - Funeral services for Capt. Ira Henry Slawson, 67, early day pilot on the upper Missouri who received his license when he was 20, were held here. Burial was in Glasgow cemetery.
Captain Slawson died in Washington, Mo. after a short illness.
Captain Slawson was born inChicago and was educated in the public schools there. he went to Pierre, S. D. as a young man and there qualified for his pilot's license on the Missouri. He was said to be the youngest man ever to receive a license.
He began work in 1900 for Capt. Edmond Senechal, who headed the old Missouri Transportation Co. and continued until 1916. He then operated his own boat until 1934, principally in North and South Dakota, although he did early day river freighting in Montana both on the Missouri and Yellowstone.
Captain Slawson retired from boating to work at Fort Peck and was a dredge master during construction of the Fort Peck dam. he later was employed by the corps of engineers in Missouri, until his death. During his life, he also served as sheriff at LeBeau, S.D. and was a policeman at Fort Pierre, S.D.
He was married to Susan E. Smith in Glasgow. Beside the widow, he is survived by his stepdaughter. Mrs. H.O. Storkson, here; a stepson Lyle Y. Smith of Philadelphia, and two sisters.
