- Excerpt from "The Whitney Family of Connecticur":.. He was a student in kalamazoo College, Michigan and there enlisted in Co. C, 17th Reg. of Michigan volunteers; was captured at Fredericksburg, VA., while bearing the State colors; and was imprisoned at Andersonville for eight months, until, being very ill and reduced almost to a skeleton, he was exchanged and sent home.
