Name |
Simeon EDGERTON [1, 3, 4, 5, 6] |
- Simeon Edgerton was a Captain in the Connecticut troops in the revolution, and was with his command at new London, Connecticut, at the tie of the capture and destruction of that place, and Fort Griswold on the other side of the harbor, by the British. The records of Pawlet show that he purchased land there November 11, 1779, nearly two years before his removal to that place. The price named was 500 pounds, and as that was a large sum of money for those times it indicates that he was a man of means.
In his Vermont home Simeon proved a valuable addition to that pioneer community, and he was, most literally, one of the "Town Fathers," for when he died at the age of 77 he had 95 descendants and when his widow died at the age of nearly 84 their living descendants numbered 209.
He served his town as a member of the legislature and was entrusted with many responsible offices. [1]
- EDGERTON, Capt. Simeon, from Norwich, Conn., 1781, son of Capt. Joseph Edgerton, who, with his ship, just before the revolution, was foundered at sea and never heard from. He was literally one of the fathers of the town, his descendants numbering 95 at his death in 1809, aged 77. At the death of his widow, Abiah, in 1821, aged 85, her descendants numbered 209. They brought with them five sons: Jedediah, Jacob, John, Simeon and David, and eight daughters: Betsey, m. Elijah Hyde; Abiah m. Josep Adams; Lydia M. Nathaniel Carver; Hannah m. Joshua Cobb; Sally m. Joel Sheldon; Philena M. Seth Sheldon; Polly m. Calvin Dutton and Esther m. Ezra Reed. Capt. Edgerton was a man of few words, but noted for his energy and uprightness of character. He was at the capture of New London and the massacre of Fort Griswold. He was in the legislature two years and was entrusted with many responsible offices. [2]
