US Congressman. The surname is pronounced with a long "a" sound (Craypo). The son of Michigan Civil War era Governor Henry H. Crapo, he graduated from Yale in 1852, studied law and became an attorney in 1855. He was New Bedford's City Solicitor from 1855 to 1867, and served in the Massachusetts House in 1857. In 1875 Crapo was elected to a partial term in the US House Of Representatives as a Republican, filling the vacancy caused by James Buffinton's death. He was re-elected to three full terms and served from November 1875 to march 1883. Crapo did not run for re-election in 1882, returning to his law practice and becoming active in several New Bedford Banks and businesses. He also served as a member of the Republican National Committee.
