Sarah Jane was raised by her mother's brother Joseph Hoskinson (later changed to Hoskins). Her mother was a sister to Cilem Hoskins' grandfather, Joseph. She left Sarah Jane with her brother and went down river to Gallopolis, Ohio.
Her father was reported to be a member of the Jennings Gang from New Martinsville, WV.
According to Jean Ruble Frye, her grandmother, Sarah Jane fell from a swing on the porch of the house in West Virginia and unknown to the family, broke her right hip. It took several days to get word to Duffy for someone to come to get her. She died shortly after.
