    RITES ARE HELD FOR ACCIDENT VICTIM

    Services for Mrs. Clarence (Hazel Olga) Whipp, 68, were held at the Ball-Dunn funeral home Monday foremoon. Rev. Vernon T. Smith of the Holt Presbyterian church officiated. Burial was in Rosehill cemetery, Eaton Rapids.

    Mrs. Whipp lost her life last Thursday forenoon on US 31W near Fort Knox, Ky. Mr. and Mrs. Whipp were enroute to their home on Collage road, mason, after a winter's stay in Florida . A high wind was blowing and rain was falling. As Mr. Whipp passed another car, his car was shipped by the wind and skidded. He lost control. The car struck the divider between the double lanes and then bounded off the highway and down a 150 foot embankment. Mrs. Whipp was thrown from the car and died instantly. Her husband was jammed inside the car and escaped without broken bones. he was painfully bursied. he received treatment at the Fort Knox red Cross hospital.

    Mrs. Whipp was Hazel Olga Baumer, born April 13, 1885, in Aurelius township, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Augustus Baumer. She attended the Toles school. On December 29, 1904, she and Mr. Whipp were married in Eaton rapids. They lived there until 1916. Mr. Whipp operated a blacksmith shop in Eaton Rapids and Aurelius. They lived at Bay City and Flint before going to Lansing where Mr. Whipp engaged in the real estate business in 1925. they came to Mason in 1926, with Mr. Whipp continuing his real estate activity. Their home was at 992 N. College road.

    Surviving Mrs. Whipp besides her husband are 4 children, Bernard Whipp, Lapeer; Mrs. Leonard Potter, Holt; Mrs. Robert Mass, Dearborn; and Mrs. Bertram Racine, Lansing. There are also 7 granddaughters.

    Mr Baumer graduated from Eaton Rapids High School and played in the high school band. He attended Michigan State Agricultural College. Mr. Baumer was also a Union Musician, playing with the MSU College Band & Scott Munn's Band. He retired in 1963 from General Motors Drop Forge in the Toll and Die Department after many years. He was a life member of Capitol Lodge of S.O. #66 F & AM and had attended the Mount Hope United Methodist Church. Surviving are his wife Orpha I., 3 daughters, Mrs Betty Keusch of Las Vegas, Mrs Avis Hooker of Wayland, & Mrs Norma Everhard of Portland. 2 surviving sons, Duane of Harrison, Walter of Lansing, 2 brothers, Lynn of Lansing and Ralph of Detroit, 18 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren.

    Born May 13, 1899, in Eaton County, died January 27, 1999, at the age of 99. Mr. Baumer was a veteran of World War I and was employed at REO Motor Works and fisher Body. He was an active bowler for 47 years and an avid fisherman. Mr. Baumer played drums for Munn's Band in Eaton rapids and was best remembered for his love of his flower and vegetable gardens. He was preceded in death by his wife, Neva L. (Bateman) on February 1,1984; son Kenneth Ripley Baumer who died serving his couontry during World War II on the USS Albacore submarine; and a son-in-law, Charles A. Armitage (1997). Surviving are 3 daughters, Lorraine Armitage of Sarasota, Fl., Marilyn (Avery) Haak of Port Wing, WI, and Linda (Larry) Hodge of Spokane, WA; 7 grandchildren; and 11 great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Monday, Feb 1, 2pm at the Gorsline-Runciman Co. Lansing Chapel, 900 E. Michigan Ave., Lansing, with the Rev. Wesley B. Emerson officiating. Interment will follow in Dimondale Cemetery, Dimondale. the family will receive friends at the Chapel 1 hour prior to the service.

She worked at Owens-Illinois in Charlotte as a Machine Operator until her retirement. Phyllis enjoyed bowling and was a part of a bowling league, where she eventually would meet her husband, Homer. Phyllis married Homer on June 24, 1972, and together they spent 45 wonderful years together. She also enjoyed traveling especially going on cruises all around the country. Phyllis was one that enjoyed being around big groups of people. She attended a weekly breakfast club for twenty plus years, that gathered at different restaurants around the area. Phyllis was very proud of the lasting friendships she built over the years. Most importantly she was proud of her entire family and how she kept up, given her age and health battles.

    She is survived by her husband, Homer E. DeWaters; children, Alan (Veronica) Smith, Brian (Ann) DeWaters, Janet (Doug) Eicchorn; 10 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews. Phyllis was predeceased by her parents, and siblings Betty, Adair, Helen and MJ.

    BABY DIES SUDDENLY ON VACATION VISIT

    Morris C. Chapin, 3, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Chapin of Flossmoor, Ill., did in the Sparrow hospital in Lansing Tuesday. He was taken ill while the family was visiting at the home of Mr. and mrs. Leonard Schnepp of Eaton Rapids. The boy was stricken with an attack of appendicitis while suffering from whooping cough and pnseumonia.

    John Chapin is a former resident of Eaton. His wife is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Baumer of Eaton rapids. The boy is survived by his parents, and the grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Baumer and Almon M. Chapin, now a resident of Chicago.

    Funeral services were held in the Jewett chapel at Mason with the buried in Maple Grove Cemetery.
