    IRMO - Harold Vern Helmer, 81, died Friday, September 1, 2006. Born in Otsego, Mich., he was the son of the late Jerry and Jenny Ryder Helmer. He was awarded the Bronze Star for service in the U.S. Army during WW II. A graduate of Michigan State University, he was an executive with Shakespeare Fishing Tackle. He moved to Irmo in 1970 from Kalamazoo, Mich.
    Surviving are his wife, Jane Helmer; son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Mary Helmer of Franklinton, N.C.; daughter, Diane Cone of Chrystal Lake, Ill.; sister and brother-in-law, Sharon and Dave Ross of Lexington, Ky.; and grandchildren, Todd and Matthew Helmer and Nichole and Austin Cone.
    Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, SC 29210 or to the Humane Society, 121 Humane Lane, Columbia, SC 29209.
