    Name:
    The will of Charles Weed late of Stamford, dated 28 Aug. 1759, pro. 29 Sept., 1759, mentions among his children "Sarah wife of John Ambler Jr., of Stamford." Sarah Ambler was admitted to 1st Ch. Stamford, 19 July 1761. he was admitted 3 Nov., 1765. they are marked "dismissed by letter, removed." He was a grantee of Chiswick, N.H. 31 Jan., 1764 but never removed. On 2 Apr., 1771 being of Stamford he deeded Stamford lands to "my brother Joseph." Certain of these lands were bounded y "my brother David Ambler's lands." He deeded other Stamford lands on the same day and on 1 May 1771 John Ambler and his wife Sarah were received by the Cong. Ch. at Salem, Westchester Co., NY. On 14 Apr. 1773 and subsequent dates John Ambler of Cortlandt manor (Salem), Westchester Co., conveyed Stamford lands.

    Westchester land recs., contain a deed dated 5 Aug., 1773 from Cortlandt Skinner and other Van Cortlandt heirs to John Ambler of Cortlandt Manor conveying the west part of farm No. 4 in lot No. 10, eighty-eight and three quarters acres along with rough lot No. 4, "together with the houses, outhouses, barns, stables, orchards, gardens meadows, pastures, woods, underwoods etc., etc.," price L314. On 30 May 1774 James Lockwood conveyed to john Ambler (both of Cortlandt Manor) farm No. 2 in great lot 10, price L111. Ambler property lay in Lower Salem for on 3 Jan., 1785 John Ambler and wife Sarah of that town sold to Charles Weed "rights in the estate of our uncle Gideon Weed, late of Stamford." They removed to Fredericktown, Dutchess Co., soon after April 1790 and are credited to that own in census of 1790. They signed Articles of Faith of the West Philipi or Old Gilead Ch. (Carmel) 9 Ag., 1792. Foster's History of Gilead Church says taht John Ambler was elected deacon in June 1795--"John Ambler sustained the family name in the part he too in Gilead Church at the opening of this period. He was a frequent attendant of the associated Presbytery." (Foster errs in calling him a son of Abraham Ambler. Actually he was a great grandson.) John Ambler appears las in the land records when on 10 May 1794, being of Fredericktown he deeded Stanford lands to John Scofield. Probably he accompanied his oldest son John to Spencertown, Columbia Co., NY, before 1800. He and Sarah have a twin stone behind the ch. at Spencertown. he d. 13 oct., 1802 in his 70th yr. She d. 22 Oct., 1802 in her 67th yr. John Ambler served in the Rev. with the Associated Exempts, Westchester militia under Col. Joseph Benedict. Perhaps also in Cap. Seely's Co. of Col. Drake's 3d Westchester milita.

    John married Sarah WEED on 3 Mar 1757 in New Canaan, Fairfield, Connecticut, USA. Sarah (daughter of Charles WEED and Susannah WEED) was born on 8 Apr 1736 in Stamford, Fairfield County, Connecticut; died on 22 Oct 1802 in Spencertown, Columbia Co., New York; was buried in Spencertown Cemetery, Spencertown, Columbia Co., New York.     He served in Capt. Seely's Co. of Col. Drake's Van Cortlandt Regt. and in Col. James Holmes's 4th Regt. of NY Line. He was dragoon in Capt. Samuel Delavan's Troop of Westchester Horse at time of Col. Banastre Tarleton's march on Bedford, 2 July 1779. In 1832 John Ambler made affidavit that he "had a brother killed at Bedford." On 31 Oct. 1846 Capt. David Miller of Bedford, aged 80 made affidavit regarding the burning of Bedford by Tarleton. "Stephen Ambler on this occasion was too late in escaping from the enemy; trusting too much to the fleetness of his horse he was overtaken and killed," He was bur. in the Indian Cem. 2 miles west of SouthSalem village.

    John Ambler removed with his father to Fredericktown, Dutchess Co., where he appears in census of 1790. he was ensign of Light Infantry in Col. Samuel Augustus Barker's Regt. Dutchess militia on Mar. 12, 1790, and Lieut. in 1793. He is marked "removed" in 1796 but appears as a Franklin, Duchess Co., householder on list of 1 oct., 1798. he was a signer of the Articles of Faith at Old Gilead Ch. Fredericktown subsequent to 9 Aug., 1792, along with wife Ruth and sister Abigail. Ch. Rec., lists his children under date 7 Dec., 1793, as Sarah, Ephraim, Elizabeth, John and Lydia. he appears to have removed to Spencertown, columbia Co., N.Y., by 1800. On 13 Aug., 1805, John Ambler of Hillsdale, Columbia Co., bought of Samuel Bell of Hillsdale, 150 acres in the town of Norwich, Chenango Co., N.Y., and removed to South New Berlin where he was a tanner, farmer and inn keeper for twenty years and established the hamlet long known as Ambler'sSettlement. Twelve deeds of land appear on Chenango land records as given by John Ambler and wife Ruth. they were organizers of the Norwich Ch. 19 June, 1812, and marked "dismissed" in 1817. In a deed dat. 18 may, 1824, he was of South New Berlin but in a deed of 22 June, 1826, he was of Truxton, Cortland Co., N.Y. john Ambler of Truxton "aged 73 last June" applied for Rev. War pension 26 Sept., 1832. He stated that he entered the service in Jan., 1776, at Salem, enlisting for 3 months in Capt. Cornelius Steenrod's Co. of Col. McDogel's Regt., and reenlisted for 9 months. He served at Horn's Hook and in the operations around New York City and on Long Island. he served as Gen. Putnam's sentinel, was in action at White Plains. He returned home in Feb., 1777, but soon entered the service again in Capt. Wood's Boston Co and served 3 months in N.J. He was born in Stamford, at 16 removed to Salem where he was living in 1779 when he volunteered to go with Capt. Samuel Lawrence and Col. Drake to Bedford at the time that town was burned. He lost a brother at battle near Bedford. he was under the same officers when Danbury was burned and took part in the battle of Ridgefield where he saw Arnold riding back and forth between the two armies and Wooster was killed. In 1778 he volunteered to assist in taking the refugees at Ward's House and was in that battle. he served as minute man and was out on scout duty many times. He mentions residence in Dutchess Co. and Truxton but omits Columbia and Chenango Counties. His pension was granted. Pro rec. of cortland Co., show that John Ambler d. intestate 13 Oct., 1835, leaving a widow Ruth and 3 sons, John Ambler, D.C. Ambler ad Stephen Ambler. Stephen was mad admr. The g.s. of John Ambler stands in the Nassau, Rensselaer Co., cem., probably he died while visiting his bro. Abraham.

    The will of Solomon Close dat. 9 Apr., 1793, mentions dau. Hannah Ambler. Charles Ambler served in Col. Morris Graham's 6th Regt. Dutchess militia in the Rev. and at end of war was a school teacher in Fredericktown, Dutchess Co. The census of 1790 places him in Salem where he bought land in 1790, 92, 1802 and 1809. he lived in Fredericktown in 1794 but was of No. Salem in census of 1800. He and wife Hannah appear with other heirs 13 Apr., 1796, in a conveyance of the "farm piece" of Solomon Close, deceased. On 31 Mar., 1807, he deeded No. Salem land to Abraham Lyon for $3,625. He was a supervisor for No. Salem in 1811. He d. 1 Mar., 1830 intestate, and wid. Hannah applied for adm. Pro. papers name sons-in-law James Wallace of roy, N.Y., and Abraham Losee of Clifton Park, Saratoga co., N.Y., also dau. Eliza Benedict, a wid. Hannah Ambler d. 9 Feb. 1841, ae. 71, g.s. Salem Center.

    Abraham Ambler served in Rev. under Col Thaddeus Crane in 4th Regt., Westchester militia. The census of 1790 places him in Salem, Westchester Co., with a household of 4 females. He removed to Canaan, Columbia Co., N.Y., about 1790. On 10 Nov., 1794, he and wife Rhoda, being of Canaan, deeded to Abraham Raymond of Norwalk, Conn., a 50 acre farm in Canaan. Early Columbia Co. land recs. are unsatisfactory as much land was held on leases. Probably he removed to Nassau, Rensselaer Co, about 1800. His later years were spent on a farm on the west shore of Lake Tsatsawassa, Nassau, and there on the rubbish heap of an abandoned barn the compiler found the g.s. of Abraham and Rhoda Ambler in 1932.

    He bought land in Lower Salem, near Boutonville, of Nathan and Sarah Pardee on 5 Mar 1795, and was an important man in that section for 25 years. The Lower Salem, Prot. Episcopal Church having been nearly extinguished during the Rev., the family attended the Upper Salem Church, but in 1810 he and others recovered title to certain church property and on 15 Oct. 1810, he was a member of the first vestry under the reorganization. This church is now St. John's of Lewisburgh. he was elecyed warden in 1822. In 1806 he was appointed paymaster of Col. joseph Benedict's Regt. of Westchester militia resigning in 1809. His name appears several times in various Westchester records. by 1830 he removed to Austerlitz, Columbia Co., New York, for on 13 Aug. 1830, Mrs. Hannah Ambler wife of Samuel Ambler and Miss Charlotte Ambler were received by letter from the Church in Salem, by the GreenRiver Church, Hillsdale, Columbia Co. His g.s. in Spencertown that county states he d. 10 Jan. 1842, in his 74th yr. "Hannah, wife of Samuel Ambler d. 5 May 1846 aged 76."

The will of Peter Ambler signed 16 Apr., prob. 3 June, 1850 mentions wife Chloe, 3 sons; Lewis M., Peter W. and Charles Ambler; also mentions dau. Chloe Ann wife of Daniel Rounds. Lewis M. Ambler residuary legatee. Witnesses Meshack Straight of Stephentown, Rens. Co. and Frederick Smith of Nassau. It seems probable that his wife Chloe was born Waterbury.

    Stephen Ambler, bap. at Salem, Westchester Co., N.Y., 22 July, 1781, evidently having been b. after the d. of his older bro. Stephen at the hands of Col. Tarleton's men at the battle near Bedford in 1779. He settled in south eastern Corinth, Saratoga Co., abt. 1805. He m., date unknown, prob. about 1809, Lovica Laraway, dau. of Philip Laraway of Nassau, Rensselaer Co. Laraway came to America in Lafayette's Body Guard and served in the Rev. The census of 1855 puts Stephen Ambler in Corinth, age 74, farmer, b. in Conn. He had lived in Corinth 50 years. His wife Lovica, age 61, b. Vt. had lived in Corinth 46 years.

    He was appointed a Justice of the Peace of Hadley, Saratoga Co., in 1824.

    Stephen married Lovica LARAWAY about 1809. Lovica was born in abt. 1793; died in 1879. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
