  1. 2.  Frederick WATERBURYFrederick WATERBURY Descendancy chart to this point (1.Rebecca1) was born about 1779 in Stamford, Fairfield, Connecticut, USA; died on 05 Mar 1855 in Darien, Fairfield, Connecticut, USA; was buried in Slason Cemetery, Darien, Connecticut.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Census: 1850, Living with daughter, Mary Noyes, in Darien, Fairfield Co., Connecticut

    Notes:

    Name:
One of his descendants identified his wife as Betsey Lockwood. He was married with two female children before the time of the 1810 census, and was possibly married as early as 1800, when he does not seem to have been included in his father's household.

The gravestone (no longer standing) of Betsey, wife of Frederick Waterbury, in the Slason Cemetery said that she died 16 December 1849 age 64. If she was indeed a Lockwood by birth, then she was probably the Betsey Lockwood born in Stamford 8 November 1787, daughter of Jeremiah Lockwood Jr. and his wife Elizabeth Holcraft. In fact, Frederick Waterbury was named administrator of the estate of Jeremiah Lockwood Junior, late of Stamford, on 2 November 1814.

There was only one Frederick Waterbury inStamford or Darien during the time period covered by the censuses of 1810 through 1850, and he has been shown in Part 1 of this article to be a son of Lt. John Waterbury. However, Frederick Waterbury was also involved in a series of deeds to and from distant Waterbury cousins from 1813 to 1818. These deeds related to the property of John Waterbury who died in Stamford in 1813. Family members associated with these transactions included a Henry Waterbury, who might be confused with Frederick's brother. But since this Henry Waterbury was always designated "of New York City" in these and other Darien deeds as late as 1842, he could not have been identical with Frederick's brother, Henry Waterbury, who was in Ohio by 1840 (even though that Henry had lived in New York City at one time). Perhaps Frederick acted merely as an agent for his distant Waterbury cousins, or perhaps his wife was closely related to these distant cousins.

Stamford land records of 1811 and 1820 indicate that Frederick Waterbury owned various properties in Stamford in those years, two of which were purchased from his brother Peter Waterbury on 1 April 1811 and 8 November 1811. All of these holdings appear to have been in the Hoyt Street area that became part of Darien in 1820.

In 1850 census, Frederick Waterbury, age 73, was living in Darien with the family of Belina W. Noyes, his son-in-law.

Frederick and Betsey (Lockwood?) Waterbury had a large family of ten children, but information on most of them is sparse. Frederick did not leave an estate to probate, so the usual list of heirs and land transactions among them are completely absent. No family Bible ha been discovered, and the Darien civil and church records are also little help. Fortunately, a small notebook kept by Belina W. Noyes has survived and its contents were published in 1973. That notebook recorded birth dates for all of Frederick and Betsey's children even though no relationships were stated. It also has death dates for some of them, as well as birth records for all of the Noyes children shown below.

Family/Spouse: Betsey LOCKWOOD. Betsey (daughter of Jeremiah LOCKWOOD and Elizabeth HOLCRAFT) was born on 8 Nov 1787 in Stamford, Fairfield County, Connecticut; died on 16 Dec 1849 in Darien, Fairfield, Connecticut, USA; was buried in Slawson Cemetery, Darien Connecticut. 2. 3.  Henry WATERBURY Descendancy chart to this point (1.Rebecca1) was born in 1780 in Stamford, Fairfield, Connecticut, USA; died about 1877 in Eagleville, Ashtabula, Ohio, USA.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Census: 1860, Living with daughter Mary Austin, in Austinburg, Ashtabula Co., Ohio

    Notes:

    Name:
Henry Waterbury was born say 1780, probably in Stamford, Connecticut. He is said to have died in Eagleville, Ashtabula County, Ohio, about 1877, although no death record or gravestone inscription has been found. He married, probably between 1810 and 1815, Phebe (?) born in Connecticut about 1792 or 1793. According to a statement by her son Henry W. Waterbury, she died in Kingsville, Ohio 1884. However, there is also a death record for widow Phebe Waterbury who died 12 June 1880 in Kingsville, age 88, which is more likely correct as it would agree with her age as given in the 1850 census (57) and the 1870 (88,;sic, presumably should be 78). A Gravestone in the Center Cemetery in Austinburg, Ashtabula County, for Phebe Waterbury, "age 72," with no date of death, has not been explained.

Henry Waterbury apparently moved from the Darien area to New York City some time before the 1820 census, when his household consisted of a male under 10 (unnamed oldest son?), a male 26-44 (Henry?) a female under 10 (unnamed oldest daughter?) a female 16-25 (unidentified?) and a female 26-44 (Phebe?). His son David was born in New York City 10 January 1821. From there the family moved back to Darien before the 1830 census. The family's census listing in Darien in 180 consists of a male under 5 (Henry William?), a male 5-9 (David?), a male 15-19 (unnamed oldest son?), a male 40-49 (Henry?), a female 5-9 (Mary?), and a female 30-39 (Phebe?).

His family's migration to Austinburg, Ashtabula County, Ohio (with all children except for David, who remained in Darien), took place sometime between the dates of their son Augustus's birth about 1833 and the 1840 federal census. Henry's household in 1840 consisted of one male under 5 (Charles?), one male 5-9 (Augustus?), one male 10-14 (Henry William?), one male 50-59 (Henry?), one female 5-9 (Angeline?), and one female 40-49 (Phebe?). Children David and Mary apparently were not included in the household.

Through his brothers Peter and Harvey, the family already owned land in Austinburg as early as 1818, and Harvey had been married there and lived there for a time in the 1820s.

By 1850 Henry and Phebe were evidently living apart. Phebe Waterbury, age 57, born Connecticut, was living in the household of Augustin A. Smith in the 1850 census of Austinburg. Henry has not been found in the index to the 1850 census on Ancestry.com. In 1860 Henry Waterbury, age 80, born Connecticut, was living in the household of H. H. Austin (His son-on-law) in Austinburg. Phebe has not been found in the index to the 1860 census on Ancestry.com. In 1870 Phebe Waterbury, age 88 (sis.), born Connecticut, was living in the household of Henry Austin (her son-in-law) in Austinburg. Henry has not been found in the index to the 1870 census on Ancestry.com, and neither has been bound for 1880. Neither Henry nor Phebe Waterbury, nor anyone else named Waterbury had estates probated in Ashtabula County, Ohio.

Henry married Phebe ? between 1810 and 1815. Phebe was born about 1792; died in 1884 in Kingsville, Ashtabula, Ohio, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

NEHG Register, Oct 2010, V0l. 164 -apparently never married. He owned land in Austinburg as early as 1818 and was almost certainly the Peter Waterbury who appeared briefly in Austinburg at the time of the 1820 census, living alone, age 26-45. He was back in Connecticut by 1823 and remained there for the rest of his life. Peter Waterbury's will, dated 7 Aug. 1850, left to "my sister Mary Waterbury all my real and personal estate for her sole use and benefit." The will did not designate an executor, but David Waterbury was named administrator on 30 Sept. 1850. Peter's inventory included an undivided half interest in a house, a barn, twenty-one acres of land (the homestead), and crops in the field, plus a small number of personal possessions and tools. real estate was ordered sold at auction to cover costs, and the winning bidder was Mary Waterbury, who received full title to Peter's half interest in their jointly-held real estate for a total of $20 on 30 June 1851.

  4. 5.  David WATERBURY Descendancy chart to this point (1.Rebecca1) was born about 1788 in Stamford, Fairfield, Connecticut, USA; died before 1860.

    Notes:

NEHG Register, Oct. 2010, Vol 164 - He was a farmer, age 62, in the 1850 census for Darien, living with Mary Waterbury, age 59 (presumably his sister) and (her nephew) David Waterbury, age 30, merchant. No connection to the five-acre parcel in which the other siblings had an interest has been found, so additional evidence would be required to place David (b. ca. 1788) securely in this family. The censuses of 1800 and 1810 have a male of this age in the family of Lt. John Waterbury, who is otherwise unaccounted for.

  5. 6.  Mary WATERBURYMary WATERBURY Descendancy chart to this point (1.Rebecca1) was born about 1790 in Stamford, Fairfield, Connecticut, USA; died on 04 Dec 1875; was buried in Slawson Cemetery, Darien, Fairfield Co., Connecticut.

    Notes:

NEHG Register Oct. 2010, Vol 164 - apparently never married. Her will was dated at Darien 4 April 1854, four years after her brother Peter had died, and presented to the probate court on 5 Jan. 1876. She gave to "my nephew David Waterbury, Son of Henry Waterbury," all of her real and personal estate, and named the said David Waterbury to be her executor. Her inventory consisted mainly of a house and barn and twenty-one acres of land (the homestead), plus a small number of personal possessions.

  6. 7.  Daughter WATERBURY Descendancy chart to this point (1.Rebecca1) was born between 1790 and 1794.

  7. 8.  Harvey WATERBURY Descendancy chart to this point (1.Rebecca1) was born about 1794; died between 29 Apr 1833 and 10 Dec 1835.

Harvey married Sarah LOOMIS on 16 Feb 1824 in Ashtabula Co., Ohio. Sarah (daughter of Uriah LOOMIS and Sarah SHELDON) was born on 22 Jun 1798 in West Springfield, Massachusetts. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
