Chief Forester in Santa Barbara Interview says He has made no statement regarding the Controversy and Will ot Do So--Investigates Local matters.

    (Associated press Night Report)

SANTA BARBARA, Sept. 2, - Gifford Pinchot, chief United States Forester, accompanied by District Forester Olmstead of San francisco, arrived this evening from the north to investigate the case of WILLIS M. SLOSSON, supervisor of the local reserve, who was asked by Olmstead to resign, but refused.

He was met at the station by SLOSSON, Assistant Supervisor Merrill and representative of the Chamber of Commerce. Pinchot, Olmstead and SLOSSON went immediately to the Potter Hotel, and thence to Slosson's office, where the former began to investigate the local situation.

Asked for a statement Pinchot said: "I simply came here to investigate the matter. When the proper time comes I will give my decision."

Asked if any specific charges were made against SLOSSON, Pinchot said: "No, only unfavorable repots have been made by inspectors." he said he will give a decision on SLOSSON'S fate as soon as possible, but not before he leaves town. Further than this he said it is impossible for him to make a statement now.

Approached in regard to the Ballinger controversy, Pinchot said emphatically that he had not mentioned Balliner's name in the north and had made no statement on the matter, and would not do so. he added: "President Taft, both in public addresses and private conversation to me, has expressed himself in thorough accord with the Roosevelt conversation policies."

Pinchot reserved tonight for investigation. Tomorrow morning he will deliver a public address at the Chamber of Commerce rooms, and leave for Los Angeles at 10:30 o'clock a.m.

The Chamber of Commerce has passed unanimously a resolution protesting against the removal of SLOSSON as local supervisor.

Stewart Edward White, author of works on western outdoor life, and a friend of Pinchot, will take breakfast with him in the morning It is believed he will do all he can to have SLOSSON retained.

Pinchot announces that he will return here on the 2nd inst, and personally inspect the Santa Barbara forest reserves.
