    New London - Kenneth D. Nunes of 41 Gordon Court, passed peacefully from this earth surrounded by his family on Friday, May 11, 2012.

    Kenneth was born in New London, on Oct. 3, 1950. He was a lifelong resident of New London. Kenny served in the Armed Forces and did two tours in Vietnam as an Airborne Army Ranger. He retired from the State of Connecticut Motor Vehicle Department as a motor vehicle inspector.

    He loved fishing and watching the New York Yankees. Kenny loved motorcycles and was a retired member of the Branded Ones Motorcycle Club.

    He is survived by his only son, Kenneth Arthur Nunes Jr. of New London; his extended family including a brother, Frederick Nunes of Seminole, Fla.; sisters, Cheryl Sanders of Quaker Hill, Janet Nelson of Hamden, and Patty Nunes of New London; and many nieces and nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

    He was predeceased by his father, Arthur A. Nunes and his mother, Gloria (Slate) Nunes.

    Calling hours are from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Thomas L. Neilan & Sons Funeral Home, 12 Ocean Ave., New London. Funeral services will be held at 12 noon on Wednesday at the funeral home. Interment will follow in Cedar Grove Cemetery.

    Hamden - Janet (Nunes) Nelson, 54, of Hamden, passed on May 6, 2013, after a short illness.

    She was born Nov. 19, 1958, the daughter of Arthur and Gloria (Slate) Nunes. Janet graduated from New London High School in 1976. Her love of singing and a beautiful voice led her to the New Life Singers in the mid 70s where she traveled throughout the region performing. People were drawn to her quick wit and amazing sense of humor which cultivated many friendships. Janet stayed at home to raise her children, but, most recently, she was a store manager for Sleep Number Bed. Throughout her adult life, she moved around the country, last living in Hamden.

    Janet is survived by her two daughters, Katherine Wilkerson of Washougal, Wash., and Rachel Page of Fayetteville, N.C.; a son, Paul Nelson of Hamden; grandchildren, Kaydence and Owen; siblings, Frederick Nunes of Florida, Cheryl Sanders of Quaker Hill, and Patty Nunes of New London. She also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.

    Janet was predeceased by her parents, Arthur and Gloria (Slate) Nunes, and a brother, Kenneth.

    A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on May 11, 2013, at Pleasant Valley Community of Prayer and Praise, 20 Grove Ave., Groton, CT 06340.
