Mary Eleanor STOHL [2] |
- Mary Eleanor Stohl Poelman, age 77, passed away on June 16, 2012. She was born May 14, 1935 in Brigham City, Utah, to Lloyd Oleen Stohl and Mary Ware Knight Stohl. Throughout her life she was known to family and friends by her middle name, Eleanor.
Eleanor attended East High School and received a business degree from the University of Utah. Following graduation, she worked at Edward L. Burton & Company as an executive secretary. She married Walter Squires Poelman in the Salt Lake Temple on July 18, 1958.
Eleanor was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served for many years as secretary in the Primary and Relief Society organizations. She was a loving visiting teacher. Over the years, Eleanor enjoyed her association with the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers. Eleanor and Squires were blessed with five children. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, cousin, and niece and enjoyed any opportunity to gather as family. Eleanor was also a devoted daughter. She happily gave of her time to serve her parents, especially in their later years.
One of the highlights of Eleanor's life was the opportunity the family had to live in Okinawa, Japan, from 1968 to 1973, while Squires was employed as a civilian personnel specialist for the U.S. Air Force. They made many friends and from that experience developed a great love for the Japanese people and their culture.
Eleanor was a thirty year breast cancer survivor. With this trial and the many others she faced, she was an example of courage and faith. Throughout her life, and even as her health declined, she always kept a smile on her face and had a willingness to serve and be a friend.
She is survived by her five children: Elizabeth (David) Bunting, Pleasant Grove, UT; John (Miho) Poelman, San Jose, CA; Catherine (David) Cox, Fairmont, WV; Brian (Carol) Poelman, Sandy, UT; Christine (Mike) Ballard, West Jordan, UT; 25 grandchildren; one brother, John (Lana) Stohl, Salt Lake City. Eleanor was preceded in death by her husband. She was widowed for 15 years and is now reunited with her eternal companion, Squires.
The family would like to thank the staff of the Charleston at Cedar Hills and the Ashford for their loving care to our mother.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 23, 2012 at 12:00 noon in the Colonial Hills Ward Meetinghouse, 1455 South 1700 East, Salt Lake City, UT. A viewing will be held at the Meetinghouse Saturday morning from 10:00-11:30 a.m. prior to services. Interment at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park.
