"Friends and acquaintances are respectfully invited to attend the funeral services this day (Wednesday), at 10:30 o'clock, at his late residence, 624 Ninth street, Oakland. Interment Mountain View Cemetery."

- As a boy he went to sea with his father, and rose to be a captain, retiring in 1851, at the age of twenty-three. Subsequently he took up gold-mining in California and Oregon. He and his partner established a store in Jacksonville, Ore., about 1856, and operated a pack train of fifty mules between that mining town and Crescent City, Cal. they had many narrow escapes from hostile Indians. Captain Howland afterwards engaged in quartz mining in California, and later was a photographer in Syracuse, New York, and San Francisco. [2]
