- "William Presbrey and His Descendants": George W. Presby enlisted as a priviate Dec. 5, 1861, mustered in Dec. 20, 1861, Co. H., 8th N.H. Vols. On account of illness he applied for a discharge, which was not granted. As soon as able to travel he deserted at Carrolton, La., Aug. 16, 1862. He made his way to Illinois, where he worked for a time on a farm. He went to Canada and in a short time returned to Lockport, NY., where, Sept. 4, 1863, he enlisted in Co. A, Second NY Mounted Rifles. He deserted again Apr. 1, 1864 and travelled about the country under the assumed name of John Peterson. About the time the war closed he was apprehended, kept for a short time in the guard house at Concord, NH and given his discharge paper July 7, 1865, without pay or allowances.... [1]
