  • Name Israel DEWEY  [1
    • He was a farmer and miller, and "a man of consequence in the town" of Sheffield, Mass., where he died.

He was authorized by vote of the town, about 176, to build a grist-mill and saw-mill on the falls of the Housatonic (in the present village of Gr. Barrington) and land and water-power were granted to him for the purpose, "so long as he should maintain his mills for the accommodation of the public." He built the mills and kept them running for many years He is said to have had quite a spirited and ably conducted correspondence with the Rev. Dr. Samuel Hopkins, at that time of Gr. Barrington, and afterwards of Newport, H.I., on some doctrinal points of difference between them. The originals of their extended and voluminous correspondence were preserved until within a recent period, but are now lost or destroyed. From Israel Dewey the Gr. Barrington and Lenox Deweys are descended. [1]
