    • Excerpt from "History and Genealogies of the Hammond Families in America Vol. 2": Deacon Penfield was an early settler at Crown Point, NY, where he was one of the first to engage in the great iron industry of that section. He also engaged in the lumber and mercantile business which he carried on a large scale. He founded the industries which have given employment to thousands of men in that section of the State of New York. He was very active in the formation of the Congregational Church at Crown Point, and was a Deacon of the curch many years. Their children were all, except the youngest, born in Pittsford, VT., as Deacon Penfield did not remove his family to Crown Point until 1828.
