- Mr. Cowles lived in East Hartford, became a deacon of the First Congregational Church in 1752 and member of the church council in 1763 (1st Cong. Ch., E.H., 1702-1902). In May 1739, the General Assembly, in consideration of the memorial of William Cowles, freed and released him for the future, from paying any rates or taxes on his head:
