Bertha was raised in Hinsdale, NH attending Hinsdale schools until her graduation from Hinsdale high school class of 1937. After high school she started her life long career in nursing; enrolling in nursing school in Concord, NH later graduating in 1941 as a Registered Nurse. On April 9th 1945, Bertha joined the U.S. Army Nurse Corp as a Second Lieutenant as she reported to Fort Devens in Devens, MA. Soon after, she began a south pacific tour of duty on the USS Hope. She was stationed in the Philippines and Nagasaki, Japan. She was discharged at Fort Dix Military Base in NJ on July 31st 1946. Bertha married her late husband Richard E. Bradbury at Bergstrom Air Force Base in Austin, TX on July 19th 1951. Soon after, upon her request, she moved back to Hinsdale, NH where her and Richard purchased a piece of land and built a home with the help of their sons. Bertha resided at their home until the time of her death. Bertha and Richard also owned a home in St Cloud, FL. It was there she spent many of her winters. Bertha and Richard were married for 48 years before his death on April 29th 1999. Bertha was well known for being the school nurse in the Hinsdale School system. She served many generations of Hinsdale children and adolescents for nearly 30 years until eventually retiring in 1982. She extended her services outside of the school system and for several years was known as the "town nurse". Bertha was incredibly devoted to caring for people in her community. She also worked at the Brattleboro Memorial Hospital serving there periodically for several years. Bertha was a lifetime member of the VFW Post 4234 in Hinsdale, NH and American Legion Post 5 in Brattleboro, VT and was also a member of Eastern Star. She was a long time member of the First Congregational Church of Hinsdale, being a part of their church family for nearly 80 years. Bertha will be remembered for her humor, wisdom, generosity, and dedication to helping others. When friends and family drove by her home they'd often honk their car horn, as you'd often see her sitting in her living room window or front porch. She dedicated countless hours to her children, grandchildren and great-grand children. She loved to read, work on word searches, spend time at the family camp in Wilmington, VT, ride her three-wheeled bicycle in St Cloud, FL and was an avid fan of The Lawerence Welk Show. She really enjoyed spending time and talking on the phone with family and friends. Right up to her last few days of her life, Bertha was amazingly selfless, modest, intelligent and spirited. There will be no funeral services per Bertha's request. However, there will be a gathering, celebrating her life at her home in Hinsdale, NH on Sunday July 14th at 1:00pm. Anyone is welcome to come celebrate her life and share a memory of her with her family and friends.
