- John was knighted with two of his brothers-in-law, Richard Brydges and John Cotton, at the coronation of Queen Mary in 1553. he was a Member of Parliament in 1554 and 1558, sheriff of Northamptonshire in 1551-1552, 1558-1559, 1571-1572, 1583-1584. it was John's son, another Sir John Spencer, who initiated the investigation of his family history in 1595, which resulted in the false Despenser connection certified by Clarencieux Richard Lee.
This Sir John Spencer (son of Sir John Spencer and Katherine Kitson) was the ancestor of the title Spencers, including Sir Winston Churchill and Diana, Princess of Wales. [1]
