- John Alden was a private in Lt. Nathaniel Pope's company, Col. John Hathaway's regiment, in the American Revolution, served six days on an alarm to Rhode Island (MSSR, 1:108; called Captain in DAR Patriot Index).
In 1790, John Alden of New Bedford had a household consisting of two males over 16, three males under age 16, five females, and one "other person" (M637-4, p.48). In 1800 there was one male 10-16, two males 16-26, one male over 45, two females 16-26, and two females over 45 (M32-19, p.419). In 1810 there was one male 16-26, one male over 45, one female 16-26 and one female over 45 (M252-17 p. 264).
On 10 September 1806 John Alden of Middleborough, yeoman, gave to John Alden, Jr., of New Bedford, eight acres of cedar swamp in the 26 Men's Purchase and half of the tenth lot in the great Cedar Swamp. On 20 March 1811 Seth Alden of Middleborough, yeoman, sold to John Alden of New Bedford, 36 1/2 acres being the half of the home farm where "my father John & I now dwell." Both deeds were recorded on 22 march 1811 (Plymouth Co LR, 115:233).
John Alden, merchant of Fairhaven, made his will 28 March 1817, proved 1 July 1817, naming his wife Lois; children John (one half of the pew on the low floor of the Congregational Meeting House, (Seth, Nathan, Mary Tompkins, Sally Johnson, and Lydia Church; grandsons Francis LeBaron Alden and Gideon Augustus Alden; and his grandsons Ebenezer and Samuel, sons of his son John (two pews in the gallery) (Bristol Co PR 53:579, 580).
