  1. 1.  John LEVERETT, Esq. was christened on 7 Jul 1616 in Boston, Lincolnshire, England; died on 16 Mar 1678/9 in Boston, Suffolk Co., Massachusetts.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Fact: Son of Thomas Leverett and Ann Fitch

    Notes:

    Name:
Although claimed in some sources to have come to New England in 1633 with his parents, he is not found in records in New England until mid-1639 when he joined the Boston church and married his first wife, and he did not become a freeman until 1640. If he had come in 1633 at the age of 17, we would expect him to have joined the church and become a freeman much earlier, which suggests his arrival more likely in 1638. he had probably been left behind in England to continue his education. His only surviving sibling, Ann, was admitted to Boston church 20 February 1641/2, indicating she came about a year or two after him. John settled in Boston, but made several trips back to England; from about 1645-1648 with Israel Stoughton to fight with Parliamentary forces during the Civil War; in 1651 with Robert Sedgwick to lobby Cromwell to help New England make war on the Dutch in New Amsterdam; and from about 1655 to 1662 as the agent of the Massachusetts Bay Colony in England.

John married Hannah HUDSON on 18 Jun 1639 in Boston, Suffolk Co., Massachusetts. Hannah was born about 1621 in England; died on 7 Jul 1646 in Boston, Suffolk Co., Massachusetts. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

John married Sarah SEDGWICK on 9 Sep 1647 in Lavisham, Kent, England. Sarah (daughter of Gen Robert SEDGWICK and Johanna ?) was born about Mar 1630/1 in England; died on 2 Jan 1704/5. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
